V7C cross-over upgrade?

The stock V7C cross-over is huge. I'm curious what the benefits are for using the other cross-over -- do you have to upgrade the exhaust? I'm just curious because it's got such a large resonator. I don't think the engineers put it there for kicks, and I'm just curious.

I don't want to change my exhausts. I actually don't mind the fact that I'm polluting less, so I'm not interested in a non-cat solution for my pipes. They also sound fine.

I'm trying to order a new crossover from Stucchi.

They seems to be on a long vacation.

If they eventually are back in Mandello, I really do hope they will supply their model, making acceability to the gearbox drain plug possible.

Edit # 2: Speaking of the sun; I just recieved an invoice per e-mail, for the cross-over. Might be in my hands within a week. Or two...

Danilo, this came up on Wildgoose the other day. My theory is that the fat crossover has to serve a purpose, because it's so odd otherwise. In one pamphlet Guzzi claimed that the exhaust was computer designed to optimize the impulses and enhance performance, and since this is the main purpose of the x-over I believe in the factory. Despite that, there are some pretty good hp claims for aftermaket exhausts.

Wildgoose Crossover Topic

Open to all theories,

I may be wrong but I believe Anders (Holt)has finally got tired of buggering up the gear box drain plug. If you do your own service you will find out the first time you try and get it out with that bulbous crossover in the way, the can is there to help with Euro and EPA noise compliance. In the US, MG cycles has them in stock usually.

You bet!

I even partly jammed the gearbox thread in my efforts. It's a very fragile thread, and no way to get access with a torque shaft.
Teflon tape is on duty here.... :S

I am able to get my drain plug off and back on, with the help of a thin screwdriver to delicately position the bolt for re-entry. It takes a fine touch but then it goes back in to stay until the next service.

I am sticking to the theory that the crossover has performance benefits. Intelligent design vs crazy design.

Yes and because of that very article, I armed myself with a large syringe and some stiff plastic tubing, and sucked the oil out through the level hole.
OK mebbe takes a few more minutes, but only having 2 months to tour, this year, I did not want any Downtime due to messing the plug up.
It certainly worked.

so... who's going to be the first to take the crossover off, and ding it with a big hammer to make a bit more clearance for the bolt? ;-)

You may even be able to turn that tin can 90

Ice, I did think about taking it off to hammer it, but when my plug came out without too much trouble I put those thoughts away.

Danilo, I never thought about that option (twisting the crossover). I'll let you be the vanguard on this.

I spun the cross over down so I could get a wrench on the lambda probe when i needed to pull it. I unhooked the sensor from the harness connection as I doubt there is enough length to do it with the sensor plugged up. It looked like there was a bit more clearance to the plug but maybe not.

I put the crossover on, but already had FBF slip-ons installed. No performance changes but does alter sound on trailing throttle. It also looks better. Can't speak to the easier oil change as I let the dealer do that.

50 cent 60ml syringe, with a long tapered snout ( Try yr local Veterinarian )
and some stiff plastic tubing, Less than 10 mins, and no plug problems.

I am interested in these topic, but for a different reason.
My bike (NTX 750) is also a small block but without EFI. I don't need more power in dirty roads(bad pilot :( ).
But i want re-design the exhaust for a more touring shape, the original enduro shape is very annoying in hot weather. I contacted with a craftsman that can do my own design
The present shape:

My wish (but with stainless steel and big mufflers):

The question here is... do i need the crossover?

Its more easy and cheap two straight tubes without crossover, better also for a repair case.
But i don't want to lost low rpm performance or torque. I suspect that mission of crossover is this, but i don't know which is the real impact.

Any experience or idea or thinking?
