This is my first Guzzi and I love the bike, just moved to North Carolina. I had to leave the bike outside on the trailer for two weeks. It rained for two days straight. It has never given me any problems and I have taken it on small trips of about 300 miles each. When I took it off the trailer it would start rough and not idle, some backfiring. I assumed water had gotten into the aftermarket exhaust pipe (GYT). The bike seemed to get better as I kept it running. Then no speed (MPH) on the display and the service warning was displayed. Before I could get back I made a U turn got on the throttle hard and took off, no issue then all of a sudden seemed like an electrical failure occured and the engine lost power. All fuses are good and the bike will crank with its starter. Is this a spark or sensor problem
I can fix ? I have had many motorcycles but this is my best. Only one Ducati dealer in Raleigh they say they can work on Guzzi. Please help.

The weirdness in the dash is almost certainly water getting into the speedo sensor. The sudden failure sounds like the fuel pipe coming off the pump in the tank. Open the tank and turn on te ignition and look for fuel swirling around. If it is clearly visible moving about when the pump is priming chances are the hose has blown off. Only thing that makes this not a cast iron certainty is the fact that itt was misbehaving slightly before but that could be down to water in the plug caps or anything. Certainly souynds like a combination of the two above problems to me.

Thank you, I will check the plug areas and will probably open up the instrument cluster and check for moisture.

No need to open the dashboard, in fact that will probably just create further problems. The speedo sensor is on the CARC final drive, it's triggered by the rear disc spinning past it. Little black box on the end of a wire retained by two screws.

Checking the plugs will achieve nothing much at the moment. You want to see if there is fuel swirling in the tank when the pump is operating. Even if there isn't its' worth pulling the tank off and inverting it and removing the pump from the bottom to check the hose. It's a 15 minute job.

Checked gas tank with flashlight, when key is turned on I can see fuel swirl around. I have no detail of the fuel pump in my downloaded service manual. I will remove tank , drain and physicall check fuel pump. I'm hoping I will see the hose detached. Any possibility water is affecting speedo pick up sensor ?

These may be two different issues one fuel the other just a display issue. The display shows all other info except mph when moving.

Thank You

Excelent information. Naturally the tank is full. I assume there was a factory recall on the fuel pump ?? I will work on the Griso tonight. I appreciate everyones help, thank you all.

Took fuel pump out of tank. There was a hole in the line coming off the hose close to the top of the filter. It looks like the new style fuel pump has been installed. Can I replace the existing accordian style fuel hose with conventional rubber fuel line and stainless steel clamps ???

Thank You
