'09 Stelvio Engine Oil Sump Cap/Dipstick Holder

Live & learn, I guess. Two days ago, I returned home after running errands on the Stelvio and started the engine oil change: drain plug removed, oil filter removed, dipstick removed. The last time I'd topped off was 2½ weeks ago, before a trip, and had "hand-tightened" (with a small wrench) the 31mm hollow hex-head filler cap & dipstick holder; it couldn't have been more than 10nm, probably 7½nm. Anyway, this time the hex-head broke off. After finally having removed the hollow shaft of the bolt (it's made of plastic) with a needlenose pliers today, I took the broken bolt to my dealer. The mechanic said, "that's a common occurence." First time I've heard of it :? . The replacement (with dipstick) from Piaggio costs $25 -- you'd think that it could've been made (at least) from some cheap grade of steel(?)

I would've attached a picture but the one I took was too big for this forum. The replacement is on page 47 of the Stelvio parts PDF.

I don't know whether this is the case for all 8V CARC bikes, but from now on "hand-tight" on the new piece will be done (wrenchless) by my weaker hand!
 
My buddy and I changed the oil on his stelvio for the first time last week and were scratching our heads as to why guzzi would make the filler hole so small. Didn't make sense to use to remove the dip stick holder to us. We tried a filler hose that attaches to an oil bottle but that hose was too big to fit! We decided to pour the oil in the valve cover, since they were off for a valve adjustment.

And plan on using a squeezable mustard dispenser bottle to top off on the road. It has a wee little dispenser spout.

My SP has dip stick - totally diffident design - the opening is up high and is big enough for a funnel, but it weighs 20x more. Personally, I don't like so much plastic crap on my bikes, I took off the starter cover and belly protector from my Breva, would do the same on the stelvio. And use a dip stick from a Breva/Sport, V7C and Vintage. Guzzi did! on the 2011 version.
 
It's a bit off-topic, but I'm still scratching my head why the Stelvio fuel filler hole is so small.
 
Yeah, who cares whether fuel "erupts" from the whole.

Nice pic, so you gonna let that motor be seen? - And take that plastic crap off and use the regular dip stick?
Its a master piece of engineering. It's-a like-a David (say it with an italian accent), it doesnt need a fig leaf. Do it! Do It! DO IT! ;)
 
You got it Rafael!! That "bash plate" is useless and the plastic covers are just in the way. My two-week trip to Colorado & Idaho (see Stelvio Out & About pics) included a run through 6 or 7 mudflow on Lizard Head Pass in SW Colorado and a small water crossing in Grandjean Idaho, and I had to get rid of all of that crap anyway to clean the mud off the sump & lower engine. Can't wait to get outta town again!!!
 
Hi I had the same problem too small a hole. I bought a fuel container for radio controlled model cars at a hobby shop. It holds .5 litre and has a long metal tube [spout] that fits perfectly into the dipstick hole without removing the plastic gizmo. It is abit slow but you can squeeze it to speed it up. I now carry it in the panniers of my Stelvio and I have top up oil with me on trips, as Agip is impossible to find on most roads my way. By the way you can find a water bottle cap to fit it so you don't have to have the spout on all the time.
