I have just bought a Stelvio 2014 model, fitted with a 12 volt power outlet on the fairing and under the seat. Neither works unless the ignition is on, but I want to trickle charge the battery with my Optimate charger. Do I have a problem, or is this normal?

I just checked, and I'd say you are correct is assuming that it will not take a charge without the key on. Go directly to the battery.

I wired up a socket on my 1200 Sport so it appears on the outside of the plastic inner guard. Straight through a fuse to the battery. This can be used for trickle charging or for powering stuff such as phone/tablet while I ride. Don't have to take the seat off either. Cost me around $15 all up.

Neither of those cigarette lighter type plugs hold very well. I tried running my GPS off the dash one, didn't make it out of the driveway before the plug fell out. Under seat required a couple feet of duct tape to hold the plug in. I replaced the dash with a Powerlet socket and use the underseat wiring to switch my fuse block with the ignition. For the battery tender, I put the leads directly to the battery and tuck the cable next to the battery box.

The lighter plug diameters are "Euro" sized. They used to make a simple adapter sleeve, but I didn't find any now when I went looking.

Todd, I know that says European outlet to cigarette lighter but that is actually for a Powerlet, which is the same as what BMW uses, to a standard cigarette lighter plug. I have one of these. Not to mention several other adapters including Powerlet to USB.
All of mine are set up for Powerlets and on each of my road bikes at least one is always hot so I can plug in a trickle charger. On the California 1400 I made a plate by the left passenger peg that bolts to the muffler mounting bolt. It has 2 Powerlets in it for mine and the passenger's heated gear plus for charging.

Thanks guys. At least I know I do not have a fault. I will ask my dealer to try to alter the power supply to one of the sockets so I can trickle charge the battery without fitting any more sockets, or using crocodile clips onto the battery. A permanent live supply to the 12v socket was good enough for my old Breva, so there is no reason it shouldn't be possible on the Stelvio.
Incidentally - I have had my Stelvio three weeks now - and its fantastic!
