Hi everyone,

i have a problem or better two. Slow leak at rear end drive. I had the two paper washers replaced but still have a drip sitting on the rim from time to time? Second if engine is warm and I want to restart I only get a click sound. Starter does not turn. I replaced the starter and starter relay but still have the same problem. Maybe someone can help out. Also I would like to get together with some Guzzi Riders in VA. Thanks and have a great 2009 !! Mario

Hi Mario,

The rear drive leak may be seal related. The large seal is easy to replace. The small inner may need special tools. Sometimes you can replace the inner without the tool, sometimes you can't.

As for the starting, not really enough information. I've seen this with Bosch starters, but not the Valeo. With a warm engine the compression is higher which may be a factor. Check battery condition as well. If it turns out to be starter, try one of these. http://www.motoelekt.com/guzzistarter.htm

Starter & relay replaced without any change in symptoms, would seem to rule out those components as the cause. Valeo has no trouble spinning my big valve motor like crazy, should be even easier with the mid valve motor in the Strada. I guess that leaves battery, connections inc both end of the battery ground wire-make sure good & tight...

Anybody else?

OK, I'll give it a shot.

You say you replaced the start and relay, does that mean the small relay under the seat? If not, that would probably be worth a look. You might also try to verify that the starter itself actually works. (Even a new one can be bad, infant mortality.) The best way to test is to jump across the terminals on the starter solenoid. There will be one terminal on the back of the starter with the humongous red wire that goes to the hot side of the battery. There will be another, smaller terminal with some smaller red wires on it. Take a chunk of copper wire about the size of the smaller wires already there, or two screwdrivers, or a pair of pliers, etc. and short these two terminals together. The starter should instantly spring into action, so be sure the bike is not in gear! You might also be a little surprised by the "intensity" of the event, you aren't usually quite so up close and personal when the starter is doing its thing. You will probably also get some sparks at the terminals when you short them, that's normal and won't hurt anything. If the starter spins the engine normally, you have a wiring problem somewhere upstream of the small red wires, up to the starter button on the handlebar. The starter relay lives in this path.

Good luck!

Howard

Thanks to all of you for some good tips. The battery is brand new ,gel type, new relay( the one under seat) new Valeo starter so I am a little clueless. I thought about the starter botton but then I think can not be cause I should have that problem also when engine is cold. But it only goes on when engine is hot. I will keep searching and will jump out starter at terminals next time. The seal issue drives me nuts since both seals were replaced. Checked to level in rear drive yesterday and it is full. But as I said I see some drops on the rim sometimes after riding. Once again thanks to all of you! Mario

Are you sure you are seeing oil on the rim and not excess grease from the splines working out? If the rear drive gets hot enough, the grease may flow on you.

John yes I am very sure it is oil from the rear end drive. I can feel it on the buttom at the read end drive betwen the cast housing and the steel cover. Maybe I should not make to much of it. My Guzzi guy in Germany would always tell me a Guzzi does not leak it is marking his spot. LOL. Rode Guzzi my whole life so and had so many good moments on it. Here in the US the only problem I see is to find a good shop to work on it if you dont want to do it yourself or can not. Also I upset what the importer is doing to promote the bike. It is a joke. Had a dealer here in Virginia and they switched to KTM cause they were sick of dealing with them. Anyhow hope to see you guys on day on the road,

Mario

Is this the old starter relay wiring issue rearing it's head again?
Basically the wiring to the starter relay points goes up and down the bike about twenty times, and often fails to operate the starter (even the solenoid takes quite a bit of current).
On both my V50, and Spada III I ran a wire from the battery direct to that relay pin 30. Remove the one already connected, and tape it up. It is also looped to pin 86 which is the operating coil. Leave that alone.
This totally cured the occasional starting problems. (Ie, it started occasionally).

Thanks Brian I will check it out when it gets a bit warmer in my garage. Thanks again! Any Guzzi Riders in Virginia by the way??
