Just got it firing!
Quick caveat... My wifes bike only has about 800 miles (and is still under warranty )on it and has already been to the dealer for the following issue... which they diagnosed as a bad sidestand switch. I'm looking for some opinions on what to do, I don't want te bike to be at the dealer for 2 weeks fo something I believe I found in about 30 minutes.
About a week after purchasing the bike my wife went for a ride to her barn, when she was finished she got back on her bike and proceeded to try and start the bike. It cranked but never caught. She kept trying and eventually it started. She immediately rode it to the dealer where we purchased it who thought that it might be the charcoal canister so they did a quick bypass... all seemed well.
A few days later the bike again did the same thing, running fine. turned it off for a bit, tried to restart and nothing. Again about 15 minutes later it started and ran fine. We took it for its first server the next week and told the dealer that the non start issue was still happening. They couldn't replicate it so they didn't do anything to fix it. After we paid our service bill my wife got on hit the starter and nothing, cranked but didn't fire. Dealer mechanic put the bike on the lift hosed the side stand swithc with contact cleaner, bike started and we were on our way ( now at this point I didn't believe that it was a sidestand switch but didn't matter it started). We finished off the season and it did the intermittent start a few more times but didn't take it to the dealer.
Fast forward to yesterday, I rode my wifes bike making sure everything is fine for the upcoming season, bike started fine. Turned it off, went to get my helmet... tried to start it again.... haha crank but no start. Figured what the heck... I put the bike on the lift and started doing the troubleshooting myself.
First when the bike doesn't start its because the fuel pump doesn't prime. I checked fuses - which were fine. Then I started swapping relays - which worked once but not again. By process of trial and error I discovered that if I touched/pushed on the big connector on the the back of the ecu the fuel pump would prime and the bike would start, and it would start repeatedly until I left the bike for aprx 20 secs. Key on no fuel pump, push on plug fuel pump bike starts.
My question is how to approach this issue, I'm thinking that pulling the ecu and checking/cleaning the connections will probably fix this problem. Should I do this myself or take it to the dealer? What would you folks do. If the bike wasn't under warrantly there would be no way I would take it to the dealer for this issue so I'm confused... I don't want to do anyting that could cause the dealer to say its my fault.
ps... I have never had a bike with as little slack in the wiring harnesses as my wife's breva. The guzzi techs really didn't leave any room for movement did they, I'm think this may be part of the problem.
If I do fix it myself I will probably be removing and redoing some of the wire ties to get some slack into the harnesses.
Has anyone else ever had a similar issue and fixed it by cleaning the plug?
