Hi Guys,

First off just wanted to say thanks to everyone contributing to these forums, there's a wealth of super helpful knowledge around here.

I'm looking to perform the second oil change and know it's recommended
to adjust the valves at each service. The bike only has 2,000 miles on it and the dealer I purchased it from claims the bike had it's first service done but didn't have any record. I checked the oil before purchase and it looked fresh. After putting about 400 miles on her, the oil level seems to be a little low so I figured, rather than just top off I might as well do the full service.

My question is, is there anyone in the SoCal area that could guide me through the process of adjusting the valves on the bike? Just want to make sure I don't screw anything up!

These changes to make it a little easier than the file suggests:

(1) Just use a wooden chopstick down the spark plug holes (instead of a screwdriver). Better feng shui I think.

(2) No need to take the alternator cover off just to rotate the engine. Raise the rear wheel off the ground with a floor jack centered under the swingarm. Make sure the bike is well supported and stable. A drive-on front wheel chock is both helpful and safe.

(3)Put the tranny in 5th and turn the rear wheel as you watch the chopstick.

(4) You may have to rotate the engine twice twice to find TDC on compression for each cylinder. This is the only time when all cam loading is off of both intake and exhaust valves, and the only point at which their clearances are to be adjusted.

(5) Make sure you're on compression by shaking the rocker arms over the valve stems. Both arms should give the feel of a click.

(6) Set the valve clearances at Top Dead Center of the compression stroke, one cylinder at a time.

There are conflicting specs in different manuals but here's what I use:

VALVE CLEARANCE
0.006 in (0.15 mm) intake
0.008 in (0.20 mm) exhaust

The clearances are to be measured and reset with the feeler gauge between the adjuster screw and the top of the valve stem.
