Are their any issues regarding 2011 carc units? I am working on a 2011 norge leaking oil from the carc-swingwarm junction. Also small amount of play in rear wheel bearing. I know many early carc units were recalled. Thank's for any information.

None on the Norges. what WILL be worth looking at is the pinion retaining nut and it's lock-washer. A few EARLY norges didn't have the locking tang bent up on the washer which allowed the pinion nut to flog out and come undone. when that happens it'll do the seal but also rapidly damage the crownwheel an pinion. If the nut is locked? Fine. Id there is oil in the swingarm it MAY be the front seal it may also just be the front boot. Guzzi nowadays suggest sealing it with threebond.

The 'Big crownwheel support bearing should have no appreciable play.

Pete, sorry if I missed this if already posted, but is it possible to check that locking tang without too much disassembly?

Apex,

I believe Pete is referencing the rubber diaphram between the CARC and swing arm. I've seen a few of theses leak/weep oil. Also there should be no lateral play in the bearing/rear wheel. Rotational movement is normal.

Locking tang on the peg nut is beneath the outer, rubber boot and tube affair but you can see it with a torch if you hold your tongue in exactly the right position and squint down the tube. The front boot whiich is the usual bit that leaks into the swingarm is retained by a sort of retangulat plate and two grub screws. While this might seem a bit feeble when the CARC is bilted to the swingarm the two cases, arm and CARC compress the boor and plate *supposedly* sealing it.

The input end ... you mean the swingarm, the part remaining attached to the bike?

Yeah, makes sense. I think I got confused because I can only think of one end to look down into (unless one also removes the wheel) :)

I can't speak for the Norge CARC unit leaking oil, but I have now had to replace the rear drive seal on my 2006 Breva 1100 3 times and the bike is only at 15,300 mikes. It is back in the shop today for a 4th replacement. Is anyone else experiencing these same type issues with leaking rear drive CARC units? It leaks onto the rear brake rotor, greatly reducing braking efficiency. It also leaks onto the right outer edge of the tire making right hand cornering very unsafe.
Are there experts out there who may have previously addressed these same issues?

Is yours subject to the recall? If so has it been done?

There is no point in replacing the seal endlessly if it still has the crap bearing in. I'd advise 'em to just bite the bullet and take it to bits and inspect the bearing and replace if neccessary. It nly takes a couple of hours max and the bearing, (A good, 19 ball one not a shitty 17 ball one.) costs $150 or so. Otherwise they're just pushing shit uphill with a pointy stick.

Pete,

Thanks for the colorful description. Yes, my Breva has the VIN numbers that fall into the category of recall. My dealer verified this. The warranty has covered the cost of replacement the past three times. What do you recommend I do? Write to M/G customer service and plead my case to request an entirely new rear drive Cardan unit?
What would you do?

Worth a try. It appears the CARC you have will continually fail.

If your bike does fall within the recall range then you are perfectly entitled to miss out on a whole season of riding by buggering about and demanding your rights from a company that sometimes seems to pride itself on sloth and ineptitude. Otherwise you could just suck it up, get you dealer to get a decent bearing and a new seal and rebuild the bloody thing and be done with it. Then you can spend summer caning the bejasus out of it and having a fun time!!!!
