2011 V7 Classic Rear Disc Specification

Recently I purchased a used 2011 V7 Classic with 3500 miles (practically new) on the odometer. The bike failed Maryland State Inspection due to the rear brake disc having a thickness of 0.157” (4mm) being 0.02” (0.5mm) below the 0.177” (4.5mm) specification minimum.

The inspection station (Pete’s Cycle) didn’t have the material readily available and had to call another MC dealer for the information and perform metric to imperial conversions.

The service tech told me that OEM Brembo brake pads are unusually hard and that could be the possibility of the excessive wear on the rotor. Changing to EBC brake pads would fix the problem.

After going through the owner’s and service manual’s the only information concerning the rear disc that could be found was the diameter, not the thickness. The Guzzi bulletin boards I checked more or less said the same thing about the brake discs being proprietary information.

Finding the OEM disc online was tricky and yielded no information on the depth. There was one aftermarket manufacturer in Australia that had a disc for sale and the thickness was listed at 4mm which is the exact same as the measurement on my bike (<4K miles)!

Before I spend $300 on a new disc with installation, what are the factory specifications for the rear disc brake on my 2011 V7 Classic?

Any help getting this sorted out is appreciated,

It's hard to accept that a disc brake rotor would be worn too thin after only 3500 mi. My guess is that the inspector has or was given the wrong information about acceptable disc thickness.

I looked at the owner's and service manuals for small block Guzzis in this year range, and couldn't find anything about brake disc thickness, although there are several statements like "check brake disc thickness". Go figure.
 
I'm with Sib. No way possible that such a low mile bike should have such excessive wear. And very incorrect info on the OEM pads vs EBC. Nonsense. I was a solid customer of Pete's many decades ago now, so sorry to say this, but perhaps take it somewhere else.
Are they a Guzzi dealer now?

Do you have a caliper to measure it yourself and post? I'd be curious to see the brake pad thickness as well.
 
After my last post, I checked the rear disc on my V7II Stone. Stamped into the disc is the phrase MIN TH 3.6 MM. I'm not sure whether the same disc was used on your 2011 Classic, but there might be some such phrase stamped on the disc. At least you have a reference point.

Todd, Pete’s Cycle is less than one mile from where the bike is parked. They are now the official Ducati dealership of Baltimore (see below).

Speed’s Cycle in Elkridge is still listed as the official Moto Guzzi dealership, which is twenty miles away. To the best of my knowledge they offer repair services only; the showroom was closed a couple of years ago.

Piaggio has also received this information. Any response will be posted.

THE BRAKE DISC SHAPE DOES NOT CHANGE THE OPERATING AND MAINTENANCE SPECIFICATIONS OF THE SYSTEM.

  • The following operations are to be carried out with brake disc fitted on the wheel.
  • Check the disc for wear by measuring the minimum thickness with a micrometer in different points. If the minimum thickness, even in a single point of the disc, is less than the minimum value, replace the disc.
Disc thickness minimum value: 4.5 mm (0.18 in)


THE FRONT BRAKE DISC SHAPE DOES NOT CHANGE THE OPERATING AND MAINTENANCE SPECIFICATIONS OF THE SYSTEM.

  • The following operations must be carried out with the brake discs fitted on the wheel; they refer to a single disc, but are valid for both.
  • Check the disc for wear by measuring the minimum thickness with a micrometer in different points. If the minimum thickness, even in a single point of the disc, is less than the minimum value, replace the disc.
Disc thickness minimum value: 4 mm (0.16 in)

  • Using a dial gauge, check that the maximum oscillation of the disc does not exceed the tolerance; otherwise, replace it.
Disc oscillation tolerance: 0.15 mm (0.0059 in)
 
The front disc of my '16 Stone has stamped into it "MIN TH 4.0 mm". However, the OP's question was specifically about the rear disc, which, as I said, is stamped "MIN TH 3.6 mm" on my bike. I now suspect that the Maryland State inspector was confused about the spec for which disc he/she rejected as being too thin.

I couldn’t find any such stampings on my bike. :(
My previous posting was the reply from Erik @ Piaggio USA.
After work today, a trip to Speed’s Cycle should get everything sorted one way or the other.
 
OK, I eventually found the minimum thickness specs in the service manual for my '16 Stone. The spec for the front rotor matches what's stamped on the rotor, min 4.0 mm. But the spec for the rear rotor is 4.5 mm in the manual and 3.6 mm stamped on the rotor. Go figure. I also noticed that there is a runout spec for the front rotor, 0.15 mm, but none stated for the rear rotor.

I'd be interested to learn how you resolved this issue.
