Hi Guys, wondering if any one else has experienced a traction control failure.
2014 Caliifornia Custom. Instrument panel shows "SERVICE" which cannot be cleared
and the Red fault annunciator on steady. MGCT yellow annunciator is also on steady.

I considered the MGCT calibration, but cannot enter that mode as "SERVICE" is locked on the clock.

Todd has advised to get to a dealer and have the scan done and fault codes determined, which i'm sure i will end up doing. Dealer is 300 miles away.

In the interim , If Any one has had this type experience , please pass along any info concerning the experience you may have had. Mostly I'm wondering if this is a "one off" , or more common failure.

Much appreciated. Thank You .

If you could read the code that would help you determine if it might be a simple or more involved problem (or at least point you in the direction of the problem, which could simply be something as simple as a loose wire). Have you tried one of those handheld OBD devices to read code (the connector is just behind the battery). Not tried it so don't know if they work on the 1400, but if you had one already it would be quick. Note however 1400 OBD plug is 3 pin which is different to the traditional 16 pin one under most car dashboards so an adaptor might be needed.

There are also a number of other free software packages GuzziDiag comes to mind if you have a PC/laptop but you need a cable to connect laptop to bike (I bought one from Lonelec in the UK) . There's lots of threads out there on this subject and you can reset codes with it as well as read all sorts of real-time sensor data from the bike. There's a video of some guy using it on his 1400 here (to reset throttle position sensor etc).

I wouldn't use it to read and program ECU engine maps as there have been lots of reports of "bricked" ECUs, but for simple diagnotics and resetting errors codes it seems fine (unless any one knows different)

I went through this years ago. At one stage I thought it was the traction control.

Turned out to be a faulty clutch switch (located on the handlebar). Easiest way is to disconnect it from the loom and measure for continuity. I fooled myself thinking it was OK, as I could place it in gear with the motor running without killing the motor.

But the clutch switch is a single pole double throw switch, and it was the other part of the switch that wasn't working (just reporting to the ECU from memory).

A replacement cured the problem.

Thanks Kiwi Dave,
With that clutch switch failure were the MGCT yellow, and red fail warning , clock icons illuminated full time ?

Sorry. Too long ago. I can't say with any accuracy.

Just remember the big "SERVICE" icon across the dash.

The bike went into limp mode a couple of times, and I couldn't get up my driveway to get to the dealer for an analysis (they were hopeless anyway).

Thanks again Dave. Ill get into it tomorrow. I Do have the big SERVICE indicated in the clock and can make no other clock selection.
Imagine I'll need to remove the tank again to find where that clutch switch plugs into the loom. Wish I hadn't just filled it now. lol.

Wow < Big shut out to Kiwi Dave !! Dave you nailed it ....the problem was an internally failed clutch switch. Took Six weeks to receive my new one. Once I installed, and the ECU fault code reset with my Flash Tool ....Presto, Back to normal. I was really hoping this would be the fix, as I live in a city 300 miles from the nearest dealer.
FYI I was able to ride during the time the fault was present, however, of course I had no cruise control or MGCT the entire time.
Dave if you ever make it to Kelowna , Canada Brewski's are on me ! Thanks again .
