2016 v7 ABS - is it worth it?

Hi Sib, sorry but what you say is wrong.
Bikes with ABS / Traction control are only now coming in. A new 2016 rider may well buy their next (secondhand) bike without them fitted.....hand gear shifts etc were on much older bikes....I would guess the last RH gear change bikes were made 20+ years ago?
AndyB

For the record ABS has been available on many bikes for DECADES (my 96 BMW oilhead had it).

Yes it's becoming more common now because of EU regulations which have basically forced manufacturers to universally offer it.

But it's been available for a long time and there's probably more bikes out there with it than you realize.

Not to mention rider training courses still teach maximum braking techniques on non ABS bikes and new riders can choose what they want to buy. If they choose an ABS model for their first bike they might be less likely to choose a non ABS model down the line.

But even if the do choose one without it in the future they can practice maximum braking on the ABS model by learning to brake without ACTUATING the ABS.

....Please correct me if I am wrong, but I think ABS only works above about 10mph....
AndyB
On my '16 Stone it works down to nearly 0 mph. However, it's possible that the bike has to be going over 10 mph for it to start working. Interesting question, I'll do some experimenting to see if this is so.

On all of the ABS bikes I've owned or ridden yes you had to start moving for the modulator to cycle itself and activate.

Hi,
I had an idea that at slow speeds ABS does not operate correctly......eg for those last few mph as you come to a stop.
So when braking from high speed it will work and stop the wheels locking, but once the bike is rolling much slower then is there a risk of locking wheels if the brakes are kept on hard?
Or is this a problem of older ABS systems?
Certainly a better technique is to ease off the brakes for those final few mph but I wonder if riders who have always had ABS do that?

Take your point that ABS has been around for 20 years - but certainly not on all bikes. And how long has traction control been available? And is it really needed on a 40hp bike?
