US Route 666 was first commissioned in 1926 with a northern terminus in Cortez, CO. 1965 marked the end of Rt. 66 and Route 666 was orphaned. An abundance of accidents blamed on "the Devil" due to the 666 designated helped result in the renaming of the road as US191.
On May 3, 2003 Rt. 666 officially became extinct.
5 years ago the proprietors of AZride started organizing a ride to be held the Saturday after Memorial Day to commemorate this great ribbon of asphalt. Well most of it's asphalt with some other surfaces and some gravel in the corners. This year's ride is scheduled for Saturday, June 4.
This is not a "parade" ride in which you all leave at the same time and follow in formation. Basically you register online and then show up at the designated starting place to receive you raffle ticket for the excellent door prizes that are given out that evening at Java Blues. The ride is about 265 miles and it takes a full day. You will see other riders but are encouraged to ride your own ride.
Two years ago it was cold and rainy with some snow off the edges of the road in the shade, last year it was so hat I didn't know what to do.
For more information and to register visit http://www.azride.com/DevilsHighwayRun.html, there is no downside to attending other than wearing out some tires.
