'73 Eldorado Connecting Rod self locking nuts?

Hi All,
Rebuilding '73 Eldo, needed new crankshaft and bearings etc. I have received new conn rod bolts (the waisted type) and
self locking (castellated type) nuts from a reputable source. These look identical to what came out of the bike.
Question is.......with the new bolts and nuts you can very easily by hand screw the nuts all the way onto the bolts fully past
the castellations. Not so on the old ones. From past experience (distant i might add) these type of nuts should slightly tighten up once the nut reaches the castellations to form a kind of self locking just as you might find with a nylon lock nut.
I'm told this is what they've been using for many years. Am i missing something, afraid to use these, don't believe this is a
place to use locktite.

Those nuts will be fine. Just torque to the specified torque of 25 lb-ft. I just rebuilt an Eldorado engine using the original nuts, they too would go on all the way without effort. The torque will stretch the bolt keeping everything tight.
 
The V7 Sport/750S/850-T/850-T3 factory workshop manual shows 33-35 ft. lbs. for the "nut, self-locking, big end".
 
thanks for the input. lots of discussion about the torque, but what's got me buffaloed is the nut which is called self locking and castellated but does not self lock. the castellation must be there for a reason. Not to argue, just don't get it, i'm used to these type of nuts applying certain amount of friction once they are threaded on to the castle area. will continue to investigate. thanks again

Interesting, I've got the manual by the old Importer, Premier. It states 3.5 Kg/m or 25.31 lb-ft. 35 lb-ft seems a bit high for an 9mm bolt. So far I haven't had any come apart on me.

I have the same manual. 25 ft. lbs. is the torque figure for the early style bolts/nuts that used the locking tab. The later bolts with self-locking nuts get torqued to 33-35.

Good info, Thanks. I'll correct my charts. However it doesn't seem to make much difference, the first Eldorado I did in 1985 of so is still going strong.
 
glad you guys got all torqued off ;-) as for the castle nuts.....,
i stopped by Oz and the Wizard
decreed something similar to Johns' first reply so i'm going with it and moving on. Thanks much jumping in to lend a hand.
