I'm on my 2nd trans output seal replacement. I finished the LeMans III with Pete's and John's guidance. -thanks again guys!

I just removed the lock-nut and worm drive off my SP. As I was cleaning off metal grit, left by the nut, from the output shaft I noticed that the shaft slid out about 1/8" of an inch. I don't remember this occurring on the LMs III; but I may have not noticed.

Is this slop normal without the nut in place? My thought is that the nut is just there for the worm drive. Is the nut suppose to lock the shaft in place to prevent this motion or do I have a problem on my hands?

thanks, Rafael

Quite normal.

If you think what the purpose of the nut is, it's to pull the entire shaft and all its assorted bits up against the output shaft bearing. That's why the bearing has a retainer! To stop it walking about in the case.

When you do up the nut it pulls the shaft through the bearing, the hardened washer and the speedo worm until 5th gear is pulled up tightly against the bearing. Remove the nut and the whole shaft can slide fore and aft within the limitations imposed by the front of the shaft biffing into the case at the front of the box.

Pete

Thanks Pete,

The inside of the trans is a bit of a mystery to me; haven't taken one apart yet. But it make sense that the shaft would be anchored at one end. I'm a bit of a worry wort with this bike, a reputable mechanic neglected to torque down the rear main bearing carrier bolts after a rebuild; so I'm quick to assume the worst.

Got everything back together.

Thanks, Rafael
