I found a crack in the gearbox housing of my new (old) 850-T causing an oil leak. I found another gearbox from a 84 California II, it should just bolt up right????
The bike is already apart, just need a suitable replacement. Thanks for any advise.

Yes. But I don't remember where the transmission vent is on the 84. I believe the 84 still has the good double row metal cage bearings so that is a good thing.

The only real differences in the 5 speed gearbox is the location of the speedometer drive in the back cover. To the side in loop frames, to the top in Tonti and Spine. The transmission vent has some variation also. Early bikes (like yours) through the detente plug for the shift drum, late through a vent at the back cover.

Good news, thanks. I'm going to try to secure that one and fit it. wish me luck. Thanks for your time.

Ummmm? Any chance of a pic of this crack? Gearbox castings on the five speeds are very robust and rarely crack. Also if the only problem is the case I'm sure that Mark and Sean at Guzzi Classics in Long Beach will be able to sort you out with a case, and build your internals into it, with small cost and it'll be shimmed up properly at the same time.

If you're determined to swap out the whole box sell me your old 'Cracked' one for $50 and I'll get Todd or John to hold it for me until I can get my Eldo crated up for shipment back here and I'll build a good'n out of it.

Pete

Pete, I'll give you $100 for it once you've made a good'n out of it :) Really I'm being lazy and haven't got round to shimming either of my boxes yet. Have to be the first gearbox I've heard of cracking too, maybe it took a hell of a hit somehow.

It's cracked at the inside end of the final drive shaft looks like it took a hit at the outside end. I'm sure Guzzi Classics would charge me quite a bit more than the $250 that I'm spending on the replacement to rebuild it but I am a welder and thought that I would repair it myself at some point and have it standing by just in case. If I get desperate for $50 I'll drop you a line. thanks.

Having had my own T3 gearbox rebuilt & PROPERLY shimmed by the above Sean at MGC I can assure you that after the initial stiff gearbox break in period of a few thou miles doing so will result in a gearbox shifting much better than it ever has. Among other things all the usual false neutrals will be gone. Unless you really know what you are doing you will not get the same result. Your money, your choice.
