I need to troubleshoot an alternator. System is not charging. Anyone help?

Is the charging light coming on when the revs drop really low or the engine is off? If not the problem is almost certainly the rotor. If you suspect the rotor, remove the stator and check for continuity between the slip rings and between the rings and the vanes of the rotor. There should be continuity between the rings but not between the rings and the vanes.

Thanks, Pete. I'll start there. The charge light does not come on and the lamp is good.
 
Thanks for the reply and schematic, John. Yes, there is 12V supplied to the charging light. It seems I have an open circuit between the slip rings on the rotor, no continuity between them.
 
You'll need a new or prefferably re-wound rotor. Be aware that not all rotors are created equal. While rotors from BMW's appear to be the same ones from the later series pushrod motors are actually ever so slightly smaller than thoseused on early BM's and Guzzis because BMW's have pissy, whippy little cranks and the rotor needs extra clearance to prevent it scraping on the stator windings. Problem is if you use one of these pissy little soft-cock BMW rotors on a Guzzi the air gap is too large and it won't charge at a high enough rate.

There are lots of places that will do an exchange, rewound for your deader. Dunno where you are in the world but if you say someone 'Local' to you should be able to point you un the right direction.

Do read the instructions on rotor removal and follow them. You need a 'Special Tool' which is easily made but DO make sure its the right length.
