I rode my bike to work planning on taking the long way home. After work,I turned on the key.The dash lights lit up but I didn't hear the fuel pump . Hit the starter button. Nothing. Checked fuses and switched relays around.
The kickstand switch hasn't worked for a while so I cut the wires and twisted them together.Still nothing.
I've checking blogs and came across this site and joined up.
Any suggestions?

On the 97. don't tie the side stand wires together, disconnect the cable to the switch under the tank. When the switch is closed, the bike is disabled. Were you in Neutral (in case the wiring for the side stand disabled the system)? Have you checked battery voltage? It must be over about 10.5 to volts for the ECU to enable the bike.

I started to take the tank off to unplug the kickstand switch. Just for the heck of it I turned the key and untwisted the kickstand wires and the pump came on then it would start. It wouldn't do that yesterday. Now this is worse than not starting.

The ECU woke up and finally discovered the side stand switch was "closed". No need to lift the tank, just follow the cable up and the connector is usually accessible without removing the fuel tank. That should end your issue. If it doesn't, let us know.

One more question. I took the seat off and remove d the tool tray and discovered an unused plug. What could it be?

What Vagrant said. Plus if you have the shorting plug (it should be tied to the cable for that plug as it came with the bike from the factory) for it you can get code sequences from the LED mounted by the seat latch mechanism. The codes are listed in the manual for the P8 ECU which should be in the downloads section.
