I can't remember where these came from. I think they go to the coils, but I'm really not sure. Anybody?

They look like battery cables to me.Not coils.
Earth strap from battery and positive to stater motor possibly?

If you don't have these already, then "maybe". But I doubt it. Not large enough to carry the current required for these tasks.

I suggest you put them in a safe place until you work out what's not working.

I believe this is the advice I'm going to have to take. As it stands, I don't have much of a clue and the wiring diagram did not clarify it for me.

I stopped at the local shop today and there happened to be a bike like mine belonging to a customer. I was able to have a look. Apparently, one of the wires goes behind the voltage regulator mount bolt. the other end goes up where I couldn't see it.

For that one I'd mount the other end to one of the timing cover screws to have a good ground.

Yes! Function over form. It will certainly do until I get this thing operating.

Hmm..... Should I work on it today or hop on another one and go for a ride? The sun is shining and it's supposed to warm into the 40's (Fahrenheit).

Finally, the wiring is sorted well enough that I was able to start up the machine. It runs for the first time in over ten years. I haven't tried to drive it, but it's charging and all the buttons and switches appear to be working. It's going to get a 2016 tag!
