'98 V11EV sidecar rig - triple tree question

Hello folks -

I just added a Dnepr sidecar to my '98 V11EV, and am considering a triple tree modification to reduce the trail for easier steering. The modification I am looking at is the "Steerite" mod from a Canadian company called Side Effects. They modify the original triple tree to reduce trail. However, I would like to preserve the ability to return to two wheels at some point if I remove the sidecar. Ebay has a used triple tree from a '97 1100 Sport FI model for sale right now. Can anybody tell me if this is the same triple tree as my '98 V11EV? If it is, I will try to nab it and use this for the mod and save my stock tree.

Thanks -

Lars, welcome to the forum.

'98's went to the larger 45mm Marzocchi forks... throw a mic on your fork tubes and report back.

I can put you in touch with a guy here in L.A. that had a Washington (State) company put a hack on his... top notch job. He doesn't post here, but I will PM you his e-mail.

Todd, thanks for the quick reply. My fork tubes are the 45mm size - if the '97s were smaller, this idea won't work.

The Washington state company is probably Dauntless Motors - I bought my mounts from them. I believe they sell rake-reducing kits as well & will be checking with them also. I just didn't want to get into triple tree mods without a way to return to the stock setup.

Sorry, I misread your post. The Sport 1100i uses inverted WP forks, and a different stem length... what are you looking to do exactly?

Todd,

I'm just looking to pick up a used triple tree that fits my EV - if anyone has one for sale, send me a PM. I want to send one off for rake modification and keep one stock so I can revert to stock geometry later if I want to.

Lars

I have one that will work. See my EV-T post in the classifieds HERE... and PM to follow.

Lars,

Have you thought of a leading link front end? That way you keep the same triple clamp, and just install the leading link into it. I'm sure a web search will reveal suppliers.

John,

I have considered leading link. It's quite expensive, and the opinions seem to be mixed as to whether leading link or rake modifications are preferable. I'm looking at the Steerite triple tree modification from Side Effects in British Columbia, runs about $900.

I have a 78 XS1100 Yamaha with a Vetter Tera plane side car, lately I've been thinking about attaching the Terraplane to my 03 EV. I saw the perfect set up, The Wisc Mgnoc rep Chris Collins has on his 04 EV www.wmgr.org I think will get you there. Also the Colo rep Jeff Pipkin ( 303-467-1619) I believe has the same set up on his Stone, both were @ the Nat Rally in Salida Co this year. If I decide to put the hack on the Guzzi this in my opinion is the only way to go. They made ridding with a hack look effortless.
