Hi
Am feeling a bit silly as I cannot get cone air filters to fit on a V50. Have attached a picture to show the problem. What am I doing wrong?

Any suggestions gratefully received.

You are not doing anything wrong, apart from trying the impossible.
I thought this was a standard mod on the small block Guzzis. Have I misunderstood? Is there a way of getting rid of air filter for the V50?

As John says you need different filters, more pancake style than the cones you have at the moment

I would not bother and refit the air box ( junk all the breather system tho..) Small blocks never seem to run quite right with pod filters even after spending a fortune on jets and needles........

Those carbs look like PHF series from here.
Uni foam type filtrs can be had with cranked fitting sleeves ,alternativly traight inlet manifolds ocaisionly come up for the small blocks. You could get some machined up too.If your looking for maximum power and efficiancy that would certainly help but it wont be cheap.

i did a v35 with one filter for a friend, uses plastic pipe to make a pipe between the carbs with a 't' in the center and the filter went on that

I purchase a V50-III with a set of cheap metal cone filters and the dam things were falling apart and worthless. I bought a better set of K & N's, they're mostly rubber that fit snug but work really well. One thing that you're picture doesn't show is that one carb is low and the other is high so that the cones actually over-lap a little. I've put about 2,000 mile now on the bike with the new K&N's and many needle/jet changes. Right now the little goose is starting to really sing so my next upgrade is ignition then I can do tiny jet changes.

My specs are presently 82 V50-III, stock exhaust, stock ignition, K & N's, sea level elevation most of the time.

Pilot jet 52
Main jet 122
Needle on 3rd notch from top.

Thanks for your comments guys.

I thought I was making a mistake as I bought these pod filters as suitable for V50 III. (see http://gutsibits.co.uk/pr/TheShop/index.php?q=sia00095&f=d&Model=13&search=SEARCH) Clearly they are not. This company does offer some pancake style that might be a better bet. The old, original air filter is held together with gaffer tape so something needs to be done.

As GuzziV describes, the idea of a single filter with two outlets is appealing. Engineer in the village just made something similar out of aluminum for his 1964 Mini, Works really well with the K&N filter he designed it to. Maybe I need to buy him a beer....

These are the filters I fitted

I think the metal top disk along with the general cheap manufacture of the other cone filters was the problem. A squishy sock filter might have worked but I've been using K & N's for four decades.

Not-Fishing - Thanks for this suggestion.

The company who supplied me the cone filters are going to swap for some pancake type. Hopefully, they will do the job. If not, I will have a look at these K&N filters. I use K&N on my other bikes and always been happy with them.

Unfortunately the pancake type air filters do not seem to fit.
I am struggling to work out why what I understand is a standard mod is not working out on my bike.

Would anyone have a photo they could share with me of cone air filters fitted to a V50?
