Airfilter kills the hole at 4000rpm

Yesterday I installed open airfilter and with happinies rode 120km with "new" motorbike. The hole at 4.000 rpm is away. Engine runs continuosly from 2.500 up, at 3.500 starts first boom. On my first km I did enjoy the fun below 4000rpm. Where I have had to change gear for 2 steps, now is 1 step down enough and the rear wheel still have power:)
I used K&N filter AL-1004, the same like Aprilia RSV or Tuono and open exhaust from Mistral.

What a relief, I haven't just wasted a ship-load of money. Haywards are fitting a Mistral pipe and K&N as part of the deal, I found the bike quite restricted on the test ride and from previous experiance and what I read here went straight for easing up the volumetric flow.
Trouble is apparently all the staff at MG who know where my bike is have gone on a ride out (save the factory presumably) and no-one knows where my bike is!!!

Just ordered an AL-1004 K&N - see how it performs with the Std Muffler - for now ;)

I just installed the K&N AL-1004 and had to trim it significantly to get it to set down in the airbox recess. (I also added silicone sealer to make sure of a good seal because of the trimming) I was beginning to think I ordered the wrong filter. Did you discard the little plastic picture frame inside the airbox, or did you trim the filter also? there really ought to be a K&N that fits better than that one(??)

Is it worth removing the rubber snorkel for any reason, or does the snorkel make the airflow more laminar (or increased velocity?)

I removed mine for about a week and put it back. IMHO, It made the power curve flatter, simply because it reduced the horses at the peak.
Of course that was the official butt dyno which may not be meaningful. I did have a short bit of road where I could do a consistent roll on test and I lost a couple MPH at the end of the test run when the snorkel was removed.

Fitted my AL-1004 yesterday, Cut off the outer lip + the 2 raised bumps either end on the mounting face so that it was flat all round. Fitted snug in the filter aperture.
The cover, inner and outer with snorkel remained as standard, although I did remove the remains of the foam from the roof of the snorkel.

There seems to be a slight improvement up to 4k, more responsive, didn't get a chance to try above 6k revs.
I can hear more induction noise low down.

It still feels strangled - exhaust next I think.
Just need to work out how I can get around the wife seeing £400 disappear out of the account!

Yes it's a shame it has to be butchered, there is a BMC filter listed for the Stelvio, anyone tried it?
Yes, drop in. I have them for sale for 80 US$... also fits the Griso 11 & 8V.

Agostini propose a Sprint airfilter as a replacement. Dunno if it's a drop-in replacement, and don't have the reference handy (but anyone who's even asked a muffler quote from them will have had a proposal to buy one, I guess).

Todd: any idea if the effects/benefits are similar with the Sprint?

What's the point of removing the foam in the "roof" of the snorkel?

I might replace mine with flypaper to catch bees and stuff...

Completed a few hundred miles with the K&N Filter.

Gets better the more I ride it. Much more responsive than standard.
Just go for it, the mods to the K&N are very simple and very obvious when you compare it to the standard.
You only need a sharp knife.

Outside of being cleanable/reusable? Virtually none unless you modify the air-box lid and correct the fueling for more performance. Hundreds of dyno runs have shown zero effect of a high-flow filter inside of a stock air-box/lid.
