Looking for some frame education. I prefer the look of the “1000 G5”. Based on my reading, 82-84(?) are the years I would prefer. I also read that these bikes have become donors for cafe racer builds because of their numbers and lack of collector status. Finding the “numbers” difficult to believe because I cannot locate a G5 for sale. Now I am wondering what style frame these have. Are there other models using this same frame on which I can cobble together an imposter G5?

Yes, all big blocks reside in a Tonti twin shock frame, starting with the 1971 V7 Sport up to a 2012 California 1100. Wiki will get you the rest of the info from there; wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Moto_Guzzi_motorcycles

Do note there are variations in the frames for attachment points. Also the biggest change is starting with the EV, the steering head is a different dimension and there is additional bracing.

It started even earlier - the Cal II had the taller steering neck with bracing.

@FedeleMotoGuzzi: I don't think they sold the G5 here in the US later than '81, the California II replaced it in '82 IIRC. They were sold in small numbers compared to the 850-T3 and Convert. A Convert is the closest relative to a G5 - the G5 was basically just a Convert with a five-speed instead of the "automatic" gearbox.

All correct on above. If your intent is to take a newer machine and make it look old, it can be done. I recommend a '00-01 Jackal or Cal EV (small computer to make the conversion easy). Below is the start of a '98 Cal 1100 EV conversion (bigger computer that resides under the seat, that I don't recommend).

Also , depending on your intentions , the Le Mans models for instance had foot-pegs and controls ( and side stand) that were
completely different from the floorboard models , (it was part of the lower frame rails). Peter
