Hi all,

Looking ahead at replacing the alternator belt on my Breva 11,i was wondering if there are any alternate belts such as champion etc?.
Have any of you been able to cross reference the genuine part number/dimensions to other manufacturers as i'm sure an after market part would probably be alot cheaper than oem.
Any feedback would be most apreciated,
Merry Christmas and New Year,
Cliffyg.;)

MSRP on the factory belt is $21.34.
I haven't bothered to look for an alternative.
In stock at competent dealers.

Just curious-why are you replacing it? Showing/sounding signs of wear? Specified service interval? IS there a specified mileage replacement time?

Umm I was wondering same thing, specified belt maintenance is as follows:

every 20,000km or 12,500m- adjust
every 50,000km or 31,250m- replace

Cliffy, if your up to 50,000km, I would like to know how the bike is going otherwise, for e.g. any CARC problems? - Just wondering.

The only problem is the general service manuals says ( https://www.guzzitech.com/MGGriso/Manual ... iceMan.pdf ) to use the special tool and tighten to the appropriate torque, and the torque figures aren't listed anywhere. Anyone have those figures for new and used (in service) belts?

Hi Mike,I guess i better check my manual as i'm sure it said replace belt at 20,000 ish miles:blush: .If it is as you state 31,250 then i'm ok, by the way you can get a pretty good check of the tension through the cooling slot at the back of the casing with the fuel tank removed,i use a long thin flat blade screwdriver thru the slot and check the belt deflection its fairly good as the slot is positioned so that the screwdriver is not too close to the pulley ie it's close to the slackest part of the belt run,if you know what i mean.
My Breva has done 18,900 ish miles with no probs has had the carc recall done, and goes really well actually even better now i have opened up the inlet of the airbox a little.I cut out the inlet to the edge of the moulding it sacrificed the shaped inlet but has increased the inlet area quite alot.I've also redirected the oil catch tank pipe to a seperate bottle and blanked off the airbox connection.

John: Had a look through all the stuff that I have and no listing of tourque values anywhere - bugger, might just need to use the Mark One Arm Tourque Adjusting device....

For anyone interested here is a post and pic from the old/old/old board that was posted by Graham in NZ...
The front cover can be removed quite easily but the petrol tank needs to be raised at the front, or removed, to allow the ignition coils to be removed for access to the cover top screws and adjustment components. Fortunately THERE IS NO SCREW AT THE COVER CENTRE TOP!The oil cooler is easily lowered for cover removal without the need to disconnect the oil lines.

Mike,

The Guzzi belt is very similar to the BMW BMW belt. The procedures for adjusting are completely different, so BMW specifications won't help. Interesting to note, the BMW schedule is to adjust at 600 miles, then just replace it at 36,000 miles. Just so happens to line up with a scheduled service.

So would you suggest adjusting the belt earlier than the schedule?

Cliffy: Thanks for the pointer about checking the belt tension without dismantling - good one!

Might not be a bad idea. Adjust at the initial service, then just forget about it until it is time to replace it. However, I haven't seen a belt that really needs adjustment. So long as it turns the alternator without slipping, it is fine.

For those of us that remember belt driven generators on our bikes, the only time a belt really gave any problem was if it was adjusted too tight. The old v belt would just give up, or worse yet take out bearings in the generator. Better to be a little on the loose side, than too tight.
