removed the generator and need to remove the key to remove the timing system cover to put on a new one since I broke a bolt off in it last year. The key is proving difficult to remove. It's that little rectangular wedge piece seen in the photos on the crankshaft underneath. Any tips? Seems difficult to grasp with pliers. Thanks in advance.

I think you'll find it is semi circular in shape, not rectangular a couple of gentle taps at one end with a flat blade screwdriver/drift should dislodge it. Its actually called a "woodruff key"

now getting the actual timing system cover off is proving difficult. all bolts are off, but its stuck on there.

I was smacking it with the rubber mallet for sure! Eventually i was able to peel it off. Impact wrench was a must to get the alternator nut off in order to remove the timing system cover. The new metal alternator cover from Stucchi powder coated black looks hot with SS bolts I put on. Matris Kit is in and forks and wheel remounted with MAS front fender to match my rear one. Winter is easy for wrenching...no stress or rushing - do some, leave it, do some, leave it...
