Howdy all,

I've just booked a trip to the Apple Isle with some friends. Now, I'm all excited because while we've all been to been to Tassie via Teradaktal, none of us have actually been with bike by gondola before.

We are going for Melb Cup weekend. What I would like to know for planning purposes, from those who live there or have been, is, do we need to book accommodation, or can we just rock up to place. Five gorillas on five bikes, hoping to do north west and west, because the HOGS will be doing the east for their AGM that time, and we're trying to avoid the temptation of burning one of their bikes as a sacrifice to our god of quality European bikes.

Also, appreciated would be suggestions of places.

Oh yes, almost forgot - will I need lined Dry Rider heavy duty warm clothing etc, or would Draggins and a normal jacket do?

Thanks in advance

Robert

you can have 4 seasons in one day in Tassie - even in Summer, so take all you need. Some good roads I know a little better up the East coast but otherwise the road along the walls of jericho? across the North was good ;)

Tassie is a blast. As far as i'm concerned there are no bad roads down there.Take a full compliment of gear as it will get cold, and rain at some stage.
I would take a punt on the accommodation,if there are no holidays in VIC or TAS at the time you should be right.
Have a good time and do a ride report for us.

It can be warmish in the North and hellish cold over the mountains as you head SSW so take layers rather than a single heavy jacket. Accom in the N-NW isn't too bad but it gets thinner as you head S so booking a day ahead could be prudent especially in Strahan. Word of warning is that under the drip line of the trees it can be very slippy especially in places like Hellyer Gorge. The road out of Queenstown is also notorious. Apart from that keep an eye out for lollygagging tourists and you'll have a splendid time.

I loved the East coast! the ride from Launceston to St Helens is a must! All roads take longer than they look on the map. If you stay at St Helens, take a ride up to Binalong Bay, it doesn't take long and the road is great! probably some of the nicest beaches in Australia! Also heading down that side do the Elephant Pass. I found most places very biker friendly, but accomodation in Hobart was hard to find without pre booking, and we spent a couple of hours on dark riding around looking, we ended up paying for a very upmarket 5 star place right in the heart, which was overkill but kinda nice after the previous "ruff it" places we had pre booked.
Like mentioned above the ride from Strahan up, you ride under a canopy of trees and the transision from dry to wet and light to dark can catch you out! It's a major blast coming down into Queenstown, also quite a contrast in landscape! Regardless of which way you end up going it's hard not to find great roads and beautiful landscapes! :)

thanks sprocket,

but the east coast will br way too busy with the HOGS AGM, so it'll be west for us.

You are right though, did the east in a car and it was great.

Robert

Yeah, i don't blame you! West coast is good too!

Its a very friendly place. I think you will enjoy it.

I'd like to add just 2 small warnings to the previous posts.

1. Wallabies. The roads are littered with road kill. Just be careful especially around dawn and dusk. I've seen deer and the world's second biggest pig run out in front of me.

2. Road signage. Not always up to some mainland standards. You find yourself going into a corner only to discover it is much, much tighter than you thought. On the way out you see a 20kph sign in the mirror but there wasn't one on entry.

I've been snowed on in November and down in the south west when the wind blows, it blows.

Cheers

thanks Morizzi,

excellent advice. We do tend to start happy hour at around 4pm, that usually means we're off the roads. But we may get caught out so I will heed your warning and pass it on to the others too.

Snow in November? We need MikeC, I've read in some of his previous posts he likes the cold.

again thanks

Robert
