I just purchased a 98' Bassa and the steering damper was taken off by the PO. My question is will this effect the handling of the bike. This is the only Guzzi Cali style bike I have ridden so cannot compare. There are a couple of used damper's now on evil bay, Pinwall Cycle has them listed, are they interchangeable from year to year or do I need one specifically for a 98'.

By the way, I really like the bike.

Fair warning, I do not own nor have I ever owned a Cali of any version.
I have three Guzzi's, a V11 (early red frame'r), a '93 Daytona, and an '07 Griso. The first two of them came with Dampers from the factory and the Griso did not. Both bikes that came with steering dampers stock developed handling issues that were resolved by removing the damper and have continued to work fantastically with out a damper. I prefer the handling without the damper. Some people prefer the handling with the damper. It gives a slower, heavier feeling that some people prefer. If the bike does not shake it's head without the damper then it comes down to a personal preference in my opinion.
That said, I have heard conflicting opinions about some Guzzi's in regard to stability. By the numbers (geometry numbers) I don't know of a road legal (in the USA) Guzzi that needs a steering damper. But some people have suggested that Tonti framed Guzzi's do in fact need one.
I hope my opinion helps you form your own.

I took the damper off my '99 Jackal as I didn't like the (slightly) heavier feel. I've had no issues with stability at all.

Thanks for all the input. I have been riding new Triumph Bonnevilles for several years, just bought the Bassa and was not used to the longer and heavier bike. I have ridden it several more times and it seems to be smoothing out. I am also going to take it to Rider's Hill and let them go thru it and sort it and go from there. I really like the riding position, does not give me the upper back and shoulder trouble that the upright bikes like the Bonnie and Tiger I had.
I hope to see some of you guys on the road.
