hi - i have a 1980 sp1000 that needs a new battery - the old one was a yuasa Y60-N24AL-B ( wet cell that's hard to find) - someone told me that if i don't get the right battery, the bike will misfire - i read here that a westco 12V30 works in some bikes - does anyone know anything about the deka ETX16L battery? - i'm told it's a direct replacement for the old yuasa - any help would be greatly appreciated

I used an Odyssey PC925 on my old Spada, but you could get away with one of the smaller ones with no problem at all.
They don't need topping up, hold a bigger charge, are unaffected by heat and cold and crank out some amazing amps!
I won't use anything else on my bikes now, and have one on the 1000S and Breva.

The 12V30 is a good choice. I've used one in my 1990 LeMans for years. The Deka battery is probably OK as well. The older bikes aren't fussy on batteries. Even a cheap lawn tractor battery works fine.

I have a Deka ETX16L it is physically smaller than the OEM battery but works fine. I also have the lawn mower battery, 12N24-3 and it works fine too. It is the same size as the OEM and will fit the battery compartment without any gaps.

Let your wallet guide you.

Some say that the older Guzzis like your SP, my T3 with the Bosch charging system do not necessarily like some of the new newer sealed batteries. I don't know about that, but I do do know that my T3 (and also 1000S with Saprisa charging system) have been happily using old style Interstate SP30R open cell lead acid batteries for decades. They have the +/- posts postioned properly for your cables, & reliably last 4 years or more for me. Also relatively cheap & available at many bettery or auto parts stores. Actually recommended by name & number for your SP (& my T3) in my admittedly old copy of Guzziology
