2009 norge 1200. I was working on my scoot today and had the dip stick out laying on the ground. I started the engine and got hit in the face with air with oil spray coming from the dip stick opening. This can't be normal for guzzi when it is bad rings for any other engine. Does that mean that the rings and possibly the cylinder need some attention? It runs fine i guess, i have nothing to compare it with. I have riden one other guzzi about 30 years ago.
Does anyone have any experience with cylinder and ring service on these fine machines. ???

LOL.

If you had ever removed the bottom drain pan from a Moto Guzzi and looked up under the motor, you would understand precisely why oil shot up out your dipstick hole.

The crankshaft journal is whirling around above the oil at the bottom of the pan! Really fast. It’s also being pressure fed through the crankshaft.

It splashes everywhere in there. 😄

Just the crankshaft spinning will throw oil and air out the dip stick opening. The bike is fine.
Thats good news. I have no leaks and the bike runs just great. So much fun to ride.
Thank you John for the response.

Hi!

If you are blowing the fuse, something else is amiss.

Once you installed the kit from Mike @ MPH, you should have no further issues.

Have you removed the battery cables and cleaned with sandpaper or a wire bristle brush, on both sides, as well at the battery terminal posts themselves?

Also, remove and clean both sides of the negative battery grounding strap that bolts to the engine block.

I have done all those things. I removed the starter assembly and cleaned everything electrical to reduce any unnecessary resistance. The spotless starter works fine. I have stripped the bike and thoroughly examined and cleaned every connector and bolted contact point using DeOXit to add a degree of electrical assurance. In all of that, i never really found anything wrong or would be a problem.
So i took a 250 mi trip to a Moto Guzzi dealership for some nuts and screws. It would not start!! I pushed started it from the dealership. Had no more problems that day. That's when i bought the MPH remedy. It worked a couple of rides. Then fortunately, i went to the auto parts store and the 15A fuse blew when i tried to startup. i bought a package of 10 and replaced it and it started. Next time i wanted to ride it would not start. Popped fuse everytime. Removed MPH and charged battery w/ smart charger now works for now.
I ll figure it out someday.
Thank you Scott.

The kit from MPH is not your problem. As we say, load test the battery. You didn't specifically say you cleaned the battery terminals. If you have good, if not do that. The terminals seem to get an invisible corrosion that prevents starting.

You are very welcome. 😄👌👍

John Zibell and I say this 20x a month…

Get you battery LOAD TESTED at a local auto parts store. They usually do this for free. Please note that a load test is not reading voltage across the terminals. It is completely different.

I bet you have massive internal resistance inside the battery from some cooked off cells.

I would be shocked if it didn’t fail a load test.

It could also be a problem in the ignition switch, but more likely with the starter button switch.
Have a friend help with this test. (It’s a form of a load test)
Have a friend hold the leads across the battery terminals and read voltage. Notice the drop when you engage the starter. If it drops below 10v, the issue is in the starter switch or starter circuit wiring.
