BNS Side Stands - What's the Story?

I didn't want to hijack Todd's query regarding demand for Euro side stands, so I started a separate one...

There appears to be a clear divide in opinion over the merits of the U.S spec side stands versus the Euro spec. My own Australian-delivered Norge has the Euro stand, and I've never looked at it and wished for anything different about it (the stand...), but then I've only ever seen photos of the U.S spec, and not actually used one.

Is the U.S stand specifically designed to comply with some sort of vehicle design regulation, or is it just a styling thing?

I'm asking this question because I don't know the pros and cons of each style.

So, with regard to U.S versus Euro, what's the story?
 
I think the US ones are designed so that they don't sink into soft ground. Europeans don't park on soft ground so have a better looking side stand. ;) Though I stand to be corrected.
 
I have both types, and prefer the USA version; agree their main attraction is the ability to hold the bike upright on soft ground.

However, if you want to install lower footrests, the end of the stand will get in the way.

Does the Euro side stand allow the bike to lean left a bit more? Also is it angled forward more than the North American version?

My main complaint is that the NA stand leaves the bike too upright and does not allow you to use it on anything but a perfectly flat parking spot.

I know this is a common complaint with the Norge and the Stelvio that the side stand should be shorter and angled forward slightly.

I would venture to suggest the opposite of what you're hoping for, i.e. the Euro version is more upright. Not that I've measured it with my protractor, just an opinion.
 
Looking back to the 'euro' stands that came with several of my BMWs, I'm happy to report that I like the weird stand that comes on the USA CARC bikes (at least the 1200 Sport.) BMWs near-vertical stands with tiny foot were an accident waiting to happen, especially on some of our asphalt parking lots. The rather unusual shape of the USA 1200 Sport seems designed especially for our proclivity for using asphalt for paving nearly everything.
 
Having parked my imported US 1200 Sport next to an Aussie 1200 sport, I can say that the US stand does look to be far more stable, and, from experience, supports the bike happily on grass, slopes, and hot tarmac.
My bike (US) does lean on the stand a little more tho...
-just checked the angle parked on the level garage floor, using 'quality' iPhone app across the fuel cap... 7*

Is there any chance of a foto of the US bikes stand because with my 2010 Sport when I park her in the shed I place a bit of 3/4" wood under the stand and the amount of effort to lift the bike off the stand is near on halved. So that's got me tinking of adding an extension on the stand by the way of a bit of pipe between the foot plate and making a new foot plate.

When you're doing the redesign, consider where this extension and new foot plate will sit when the stand is not in operation. You may gain respect for the designer of the US stand.
 
I have both types, the US version gives me more confidence when parking on soft ground.

However, it is harder to access, and will not allow installation of lowered footpegs or some modifications with the exhaust.
