I recently had the gearbox main shaft replaced under warranty on my '06 Breva 1100- 17000km on the clock. The problem manifested itself as a clunking/ratcheting sound and action as the bike moved off in first gear. You can see in the photo that all the small "teeth", except one, were missing. I don't know how a gearbox works but I understand that a cir-clip is positioned here to hold the cogs in place. Only a few of the teeth were found in the box when it was flushed out; perhaps the others flowed out with the oil at the 10,000 and 1000km services? The only suggestion so far is that the box was poorly shimmed at manufacture.

I don't ride hard, there's no scraping marks on my pegs. I just ride around on weekends and tour a couple of times a year. No city riding, so not many gear changes either. I'm perplexed.

That is an odd one. There are no shimming operations per-se in the nuovo six speeder. As you say pinions are I believe retained by circlips. Possibility could be a loose circlip caused by stretching on installation allowing it to rattle about and errode he teeth of a shaft with inferior hardening maybe but I really have no idea. Given the numbers of them out there though and this being the first example of this problem I've heard of I'd scarcely think it would be an endemic problem.

Pete - on my box, it's often a bit hard to get out of or (esp.) through neutral while riding with the bike still cold (= the couple first shifts). AFAIK I'm not the only one, it doesn't appear to be a problem in that it's been like this since the bike was new and things don't get 'worse'. But could there be a relation?

I expect the dog teeth had broken off due to the carburising / tempering process not being carried out correctly, as these parts are heat treated in batches there must be some more examples out there if this is the reason.
I am quite new to Guzzi having defected from Triumph, I must say everyoone praises the new 6 speed box as silky smooth and sweet changing, all I can say is I woulld have hated the old box, my Breva 1100 box is quite noisy in 3rd and the whole transmission is very clunky around town, the bike in general though is a joy to ride on the open road....when you can find one in the congested, speed camera, speed hump laden roads in the UK.
