Breva speedometer failing?

My 2006 Breva 1100's speedometer is playing up. After 3 or 4 engine starts (as in running around town) the speedo stops at 20 mph (usually) and sometimes much higher numbers. Wherever the needle stops is then "zero," so it will show, say, 95 mph at a true 70. It happened to me once on its original battery, now has a newer battery that has some miles on it now, and is always parked on a Battery Tender.

Detaching the ground cable at the battery fixes it for a while, but the intervals of lucidity are getting shorter. Has anyone else had a similar problem? Is there a fix? And is the speedometer separately replaceable from the rest of the cluster? Thanks!

Tom Kee

I had one play up once, but several on/off cycles of the ignition switch (it performs a self check) brought it back to the correct zero and it never happened again. I don't recommend leaving a bike permanently on a battery tender. One day a month is enough. As far as I know, the complete cluster must be replaced as the speedometer is electronic and an integral part of the cluster.

Thanks, John. That's what I did today when I got back home, and after several cycles it did return to zero. I had cycled it several times at stoplights without success. (Got her past 140 mph at one point!) If it will keep doing that, even if it takes several cycles, I'll be reasonably happy. I'm reluctant to use the battery-disconnect method too often because of the electronics. It does worry me that it is becoming more frequent.

I was afraid you'd tell me it was an integral part of the assembly!

My 2007 Breva 1100 speedo would stop randomly when I turned the ign on and that would be the new "zero", the only way to get it back to zero was to turn the ignition on/off dropping it back 10km/hr each time. This only manifested itself in hot weather with direct sun on the speedo face. A temporary solution was to cover the speedo with gloves or park in the shade. The permanent solution was a total replacement of the speedo under warrenty .

Kevin, I did wonder if the hot sun had something to do with it. It was very hot and sunny in metro Phoenix yesterday. I've certainly had it out in the sun many times, but it was at its worst (the needle froze all the way to the top of its self-check movement) in a very hot parking lot. I'll try the cover-up under similar circumstances. It did not start to completely recover (it had come down to about the 25 mph mark after more cyclings) as you described until home in my slightly shaded driveway.

Thanks,
Tom
