broke transmission breather plug

Hello everyone.

I hope you can lend me hand. I don't know how I can be so stupid but I broke the breather plug situated on top of the transmission cage of my 2007 Griso. The good news is that the cage is intact. The bad news is that half of the plug is still screwed in. After some thought and trying several alternatives I'd like to ask you a couple of questions:

1. How difficult is it to remove the broken portion of the plug from the cage? Are there any tools just for this sort of thing?
2. What's the worst case scenario If in the process of removing the broken plug pieces fall inside the transmission box?
3. Would it be ok to leave the broken portion screwed in and insert a breather hose or perhaps a cap with a perforated top?

Any help is very much appreciated.

Since you are Canadian, I'm assuming the "transmission cage" is the CARC. You could try an easy out. First I'd soak the broken piece with some penetrating oil. Then heat the case. Be careful with the easy out. If you feel it may shear off bits of the vent, stop and take it to a professional. Bits of steel in the CARC will not help it. That is a flaw in the Guzzi documentation for the oil change procedure that Graham discovered years ago and passed onto this board. Under no circumstance try to remove the vent in the CARC, it will break.
 
If I understand correctly I can try the extractor tool using the procedure that you are recommending. However, I do not understand what you mean by "Under no circumstance try to remove the vent in the CARC, it will break"

Is the vent you broke in the gearbox/transmission or the CARC (the big lump you bolt the back wheel to)?

I've heard of the CARC vent breaking, but never the gearbox/transmission one. How did you manage that?

Maybe a picture of where you broke it would help.
 
Hi John, I broke the small breather plug which sits on the top section of the transmission cage just under where the swing arm meets the cage. I followed your advice and I took the bike to my mechanic this morning and he was able to remove the broken section of the breather plug in a few seconds. Since it'll take several days to order a replacement I have installed a temporary breather as follows:

The temporary breather that I am using is basically a hollow screw (used in some Ford models for the flow of liquids) to which I've attached a short piece of plastic tubing. Do you foresee any problems with this patch? My understanding is that the function of the breather plug is to allow the transmission oil to escape in case it dilates due to heat. I guess a secondary function is to provide some sort of breathing but I do not know if this is correct or why it would be necessary.

Please let me know whether this temporary solution seems ok. By the way, let me thank you for your help. Now I can continue to use the bike while I locate and order a new plug.
 
It'll be fine. The main purpose of the breather is simply to allow air to escape as the box heats up so the seals don't become pressurised. Best idea is to plug the end of the hose you've installed with something, (A ball bearing or some such.) and then make a small slit in the hose crosswise just below the plug. That will allow air out but will prettymuch prevent water or muck getting in.
