This spring on my '02 EV is broken. How important is it? Rather than get a replacement on back-order from Italy, is there any other spring that I can use?

My understanding is the spring only affects the amount of pressurized brake fluid getting to the rear brake, and is reduced when the swinging arm is hanging lower, i.e. as when the rear is raised due to a large bump. This reduces the chance of a rear wheel lock up.
The swing arm will move lower in relation to the frame under braking as well as weight shifts to the front. I could actually lift the rear wheel on my EV under heavy braking, not very far, but folks could see daylight under it.
Yes, and in this situation, the pressure to the rear brake is reduced to avoid the possibility of lockup.
