That was a common mod back then. If non synthetic oil was used, the rear drive had a tendency to build pressure and cause problems (leaks) even though the pinion shaft isn't sealed. Go ahead and get a new fill plug and use synthetic oil and you should be fine. Also I don't recommend using moly in the rear drive. I've seen it damage the needle bearing in the rear drive. It is good for the gears, but not so good for the bearings.

Thanks John, its great to have experts on 24 hour call. I thought it would be something to do with pressure but culdnt work out why.

And what makes you think it is the Moly that has damaged the bearing? I don't believe that.

Read up on moly. Also if you use synthetic oils, there is no need for Moly. On the bearing failures I've seen the inner race (carrier body) was pitted badly. This can be caused by the solids in Moly or from chemical reaction.

Also BMW has been using gear drive longer (since 1923) that Guzzi and has never recommended the use of Moly in their rear drives. It is not recommended in automotive rear drives either.

I have seen many Guzzis that have been ridden over 500000 kilometres allways using moly and non synthetic oil and never opened the final drive so I don't think that the moly is so bad.
