CARC seal question

I am going to replace to large seal on the CARC of my '07 Norge because it has begun to weep a bit and is oiling the rear brake disc. The OEM seal is marked as 85 110 8.5. My local bearings shop has one in stock in 85 110 10; can I safely use it , or will the extra 1.5mm of depth cause a problem?

Thanks,
Herb

The seal shouldn't be an issue. Are you sure the bearing is OK? Usually the bearing going bad will cause the seal to leak. Check for lateral and vertical play in the wheel.

Thanks for the response, John. The bearing was my first concern too, as I had heard of other failures; but there is no discernible play when trying to rock the wheel side to side or up/down. I have removed the seal and a visual inspection of the bearing reveals no scoring or galling. The bearing rolls smoothly and quietly; I am convinced that it is good.

I asked about the seal depth because I note two cutouts in the outer face of the carc body just below where the oem seal rested, and wonder if they serve some lubrication function that would be blocked by the deeper seal. There is about 1 millimeter of fudge room above the location of the original seal that I believe can be used to keep the cutouts unblocked. Unless someone else writes to warn against it, I will install the deeper seal and hope for the best.

Herb,
If you are still here, have you replaced the seal? I joined the club of CARC-leakers and will have to do the work. Probably not yet- the leak is minor, no oil on the rotor or drops on the ground, but leaks usually getting worse over time.

What's the point in postponing this - unless it is until the earliest next moment you can do it / have it done?

Bwcause the bearing doesn't feel loose now, but it still may be the underlying problem. If the leak will become more severe, I will be able to feel the play. At this point this leak- actually more like sweating doesn't present any issues, I found it only because I took the wheel off.

The original seal is a Viton type, chack with your bearing supplier but if the aftermarket one is a Nitrile type it *Might* be a problem. The BMW seal for their floating bevelboxes is also deeper and can be used as a cheaper alternative to the poisonously expensive Guzzi seal so the depth won't make any difference.

I'm a bit slow responding, sorry, I had forgotten my password.

I did replace the carc seal with an $8.50 item from my local bearing shop. It is 10mm deep instead of the original 8.5mm and is performing as hoped without any leaking or other issues. It has been in service for 5k miles. I'll let you draw your own conclusions as to whether that is sufficient mileage to prove it's suitability as a replacement for the stock seal; but I now feel comfortable that it will have at least as good a service life as the original did (25k).

Thanks for your answers. I have an idea about Guzzi prices. Before adjusting the valves, I bought cover gaskets from a local dealer. They were about $45. Later I learned about $2 alternatives :)
So, how do I find a bearing shop? Didn't know they existed.

Try looking in the Yellow Pages under 'Bearing Supplies' or 'Bearing Factors'. Or simply do a web search.

http://www.daltonbearing.com/suppliers/ ... Seals.aspx

There's two. They were under 'Oil seal suppliers USA.

And in Baltimore, http://www.superpages.com/bp/Baltimore- ... 7614165320 and applied bearing

Thanks, I didn't know that these parts are industry standard and readily available.
I searched their catalog, and came up with 6 size compatible seals, 2 from one company and 4 from another. They are different in number of lips and material. Which one should I pick?

Turned out that finding the seal is not as difficult as I sought. MPH has a proven BMW seal for $26.
