I`ve been trying to understand why my 1200 sport makes such a godawful clonk noise when I release the clutch lever at walking pace. I complained about this to the tech director of Piaggio here in uk . I met him and he tested the bike himself concluding that it was noisy and could be reduced by fitting a new drive shaft. A month later I collected the bike, tested it again and heard the same noise.
When I remonstrated with the shop they got keys to a 2v griso and a new stelvio that were in the car park. Climbing on these bikes they produced the same noise when the clutch was released.
I was told by another employee that the problem lies in the gearbox, that it could be re shimmed and that may help with the noise but I`m without a bike for a couple of months thru summer or I just put up with it and ride around the problem slipping the clutch at every stop and junction.
In 18 months of working on this since the bike was new I now accept its an undesirable characteristic and probably will do no harm. I`ve done 8500 miles now.
Why cant Guzzi make a quiet shaft drive when other manufacturers can?

At low speeds the CARC bikes do "clonk" Adjusting the free play out of the throttle cables helps. With time and correctly adjusted cables you do get smoother and the clonk diminishes. The was covered years ago on the forum. Also an updated map for my 1100 Breva helped. Check that your Sport has the latest map as well.

Most, I think don't have an issue slipping the clutch. I don't give it a second thought - just habbit I guess. It just a different machine than you're used to.

As for other drive shaft manufactures. IIRC the Japanese bike, at least from a few years back, suffer from shaft jacking. With the tonti rear drive it was hardly noticeable. A trade off was made to eliminate jacking completely in the Aprilia Guzzis. Not sure about BMW, but wouldn't expect jacking with those. The dogs have bigger gaps between the them and the seat (I don't know the term for the space the receives the dogs). That slack probably magnifies the clunk.

As John says, improved fueling helps. I don't mind since everything is smooth at normal speeds and is flawless in hard acceleration.

The main Cush component in the driveline is the bonded rubber interface in between the inner and outer parts of the driveshaft. If your Sport is a 8V it is the only Cush component.

In any constant mesh box there will be an element of shock imposed on the driveline as the dogs engage. All any form of Cush does is mask the symptoms. Its a machine. Its going to make noises. If you find it unliveable sell it and buy something else. Its not rocket science.

Doesn't the new clutch plate have cush springs in it Pete?
