Does anyone know what is under the cap of the CARC vent? Does the little top hat thing come off,if so is it a push fit or is it threaded? I am a little worried about water ingress after reading of a few problems on this forum, and want to investigate the vent, but obviously without damaging it.I thought about adding a peace of plastic to extend the hugger back a little, thus sheilding the vent from the back wheel.Any thoughts about this?

If you go through Pete's description of the kit he produces as a "fix", the rear axle housing must be threaded for the main portion of the vent assembly. The thread is probably a straight thread (not tapered), because he uses a banjo fitting at the rear axle housing.

As far as shielding, I would suspect that anything you can do to minimize water spray/flow around that vent cap is a good thing.

See link below for the solution to your problem.
Shielding may help but I suspect it won't completely eliminate the risk, especially if you ride in wet conditions on a regular basis.
Pete Roper's kit is an elegant solution to this potentially expensive problem for a moderate cost or if you don't want to spend the money you could make something similar yourself.
I have one of these fitted to my Griso, no water in my CARC.

My Griso is fitted with Pete's Carc Savior After 10 months and a couple of hellaious days of riding in rain, Just drained it and it looks fine no indication of water ingress. As Mark says an elegant solution and I hope he produces one for my non Carc V7C.

The factory vent is little more then a stove pipe on a roof with a rain cap on it.
