Checking and adjusting Valve Clearance

Normally the valve clearance is adjusted at 1.500km, 10.000 km and then every 10.000 km.

Some say it is better to make a check after 5.000 km (what i normally do with my 4v BMW's the first time).

But now i must work on a 90°V for the first time, and i was thinking at the TDC (Top Dead center) of this engine.

With my BMW i put the bike in 6 gear , dismount the Bosh sparks, and then i turn on the rear wheel.

How do i manual turn cylinders on a guzzi ? Anyone who done it, has pictures here ?

I know i only have 38 km but very soon i will have to do the valve adjustment 2 or 3 times in the first 10.000 km.

The answer to my question was :

9.) Pry out the rubber bung from the front of the alternator belt cover.

Et voila c'est fait.

Thx

If you understand the basics of a 4 cycle motor the angle of the cylinders is completely irrelevant.

Pete,

I have done many valve adjustments to my Stelvio, each time I follow your instructions and the bike starts and runs better then before I started the job. I always pull the rubber plug from the side of the fly wheel but to this day I have never found a mark on the fly wheel or anything that says "TDC". I just rotate the motor with a soda straw and when both sets of adjusters are loose and sloppy and the soda straw is falling out of the cylinder bore I figure it is at TDC.

Is the "TDC" mark on the fly wheel something really noticeable like on my 1150GS or does Mario at the motor factory just make a scratch mark at "TDC" or maybe not mark it at all?

Actually, I always use the center stand, sixth gear, and turn the wheel. I find it as easy or easier, or it is just a habit with me. And I don't waste brain cells remembering which direction to turn it from the front.

Hi Kwn306,
On my Breva there definatly are marks on the flywheel, they are not on the teeth but just behind them, you may need a small torch to see them, It is not marked TDC but "S" which stands for Sinistra or Left and "D" which stands for Destra or right. I believe in Latin Sinistra means sinister/evil as left handed people were deemed so.

Actually, Destra is right, Sinestra is left, not evil. The derivation of sinister (in English) is that left handedness was considered evil. I'll give you a 50% on that one.

sticking it in top and just spinning the don'f with the wheel is just fine of course. Main reason I suggested using he crank nut is 'cos Grisos don't have a centrestand. as for the timing marks onthe flywheel? Perhaps there aren't any on the newer bikes. After all the timing isn't readily adjustable and is triggered off the cam or dummy-shaft. Never using them for tappet setting I have to admit I've not looked so I may of been promulgating a myth!

Thanks, Kevin, John & Pete; I learned something today. Not only did I get a lesson in "TDC" on a Guzzi (S & D) but I learned some Italian and Italian history when it is converter to US English ............today is not a total waste, wait a minute we still have O'bama as President    There for a minute I thought I was looking through rose colored glasses :S :S

Don't you mean "through" rose colored glasses? I hate it when spell check misses the wrong word that is spelled correctly.

No no.
In Guzzi speak, "D" is for "disa side" and "S" is for "s'not disa side".
