There is an electrical connection attached to the clutch. The manual says it does the following below. I guess it allows starting in gear?

"If the gear is engaged but the clutch is pulled i.e. circuit closed to ground, vehicle startup is enabled anyway"

Mine i noticed is broken today. I have two questions. 1/ Does it matter? and 2/ it looks as though it was a permanent attachment, therefore you would have to replace the whole clutch leaver assembly is that right?

I would imagine that if it is broken and stuck in closed contact, you'd be able to start it in any gear without holding the clutch in. But if it's stuck in open contact, then there would be no harm. You would have to be in neutral when starting.

When you say broken, is a wire off or something else? It is a bolt on microswitch, not part of the lever unit. If you think the switch isn't working, spray some electrical contact cleaner into it and operate it a few times, chances are that will get it making contact again.

Thanks Asylum, so basically it shouldn't cause a problem.
Brian, the switch had come apart and there were bits hanging out!, properly broken. It look at a cursory glance that it was built into the clutch assembly, if it only needs the cable and the microswitch is built into the end of the cable i guess it would be cheap to replace. Although i always pull i the clutch before starting anyway.
