Compression Tester

Once you get over the 40% range you are really getting any useful data except that you have a problem!

The one thing I would take a look at is the tappets while I was in there.

It is a bit odd that the rings and valves would be shot at that low (for a Guzzi) a mileage. If you are up for it removing the cylinders is a piece of cake - I reckon I can take one side off and put it on in less than an hour. Then take the bits to a machine shop and save a bunch of dough. The OEM valves should be fine - you could go for aftermarket valves such as Manley or Ferrea but they will be a special order.

I just spoke with the shop via e-mail this morning, and I am scheduled to take it in next Saturday for surgery. I would go ahead and take just the heads to them to save money, as suggested, but I want them to look at everything up front while it's in the shop and while parts are more easily obtainable (than where I am anyway). Who knows what else might be worn out.

While it's there I intend to rent a new Vintage for at least a day.

Everything from the engine back should be OK since I had the clutch and final drive replaced last spring and also had a new 5th gear along with many small details taken care of. All that's left to spruce up is the motor itself, and if push comes to shove, I have already purchased another EV engine with a good deal less miles on it than mine.

Christopher, so you think this is unusual wear and tear for 111,000 ? I have had several folks comment saying things like "it's about time", etc. I have read about Guzzis with over 300 K on the clock, but I assumed those engines had been gone into at least once or twice in the past to get that kind of service.

How can my engine even run at all with little compression and excessive blow by ?

All I know is that I'm looking forward to riding with a fresh engine for a change; it's been a very long time. I will have to keep my visor shut at all times now since my big grin will be conducive to letting in all kinds of insects and debris:laugh:

On the other hand, when I write the check after the work, I imagine the grin will turn to :(

OK, good news this morning :)

After about 4500 miles on the valve job and new rings, I decided to do another compression and leak down test for comparison.

Before the shop time, the leakdown was 100% on the right side and 27% on the left.

Compression was 65 on the right and 143 on the left.

After the wife and I went on a twenty mile or so ride to warm up the EV, here are the new results.

Compression
160 both sides

Leak down
3% right
4% left

Can't complain about those numbers!

I did have a scare though. When I first checked compression, both sides were only 110 :( Luckily I had forgotten to open the throttle which made a big difference.
