Dash display acting up

William -

My two cents: experience with fixing electronic equipment in the field points to the connector on the dash.
Your dash works for a while but then starts cutting out, freezes or goes blank after vibration and maybe heat is applied (from riding).
This seems to indicate moments of intermittent voltage, low voltage or no voltage.

You may be able to pin-point the cause by gaining access to the connector, starting your bike and while its running, grab the connector and wiggle it side/side and in/out while watching your display. If it changes, glitches, jumps, goes blank, etc -bingo- you found your gremlin.

As others have said, carefully inspect the connector contacts and the back of the dash unit where the connector seats to be SURE there is no debris (or dielectric residue....sorry)

It is not hard to misalign that connector to the dash at the start and just because the "locking cam/lever" is down does not mean the connector is seated correctly. Use a magnifying glass to inspect it (I keep one in my tool bag now).

*NOTE: Do NOT disconnect the connector from the dash while the bike is running/ignition on/ etc* (there is my legal CYA)
Good luck! Electrical gremlins are best solved by being methodical and through and only at the end by applying a really big hammer.

In some cases a big hammer does work. I worked for a construction company for many years and they refused to fix the starter on a Bobcat skid steer. For more than a year I had to rap on the starter with a hammer to get it to work. One day I donned my safety glasses, grabbed a small sledgehammer and smashed the starter to pieces. It was replaced in a couple of hours and ran perfectly thereafter.

Lol! A hammer makes terrible screw driver, but sometimes it makes a great solution.

Well the dash stayed problem free for about fifty miles, so hopefully things are resolved. one more thing I installed new tires also so I figured maybe the sensors could affect the dash, not sure if this makes sense but I removed, cleaned and reinstalled them just for piece of mind. Leaving Monday morning for a 10 day trip so hope I have my problem solved.

Well, Back from my 2,500 mile trip and the dash worked fine for the most part but did blip off a few times. Once while fueling I reset the trip meter after it blipped off and then scrolled through the functions and back to trip A and it has stayed on and functioned well since, not sure what the problem is but it is still working. My local dealer is about 40 miles away and was wondering if I brought it in is it possible they can do a diagnostic check on this to pin point a problem with the dash or would that be a waste of time.

Unfortunately, this is a "gremlin" type issue, and no diagnostic software exists to pin point this. It would be a hunt and peck kind of job, and you are better off keeping your money and monitoring it if you ask me...
