OK. I thoroughly cleaned battery terminals, which were somewhat corroded. Ground connection to location near starter is clean as a whistle, and tight. I searched for pinched or abraded wires near starter and in the loom under the seat, no obvious problems noted. Bike overnight on Battery Tender (where it lives when bike is not in use), charged to 13.2V (measured at rest out of the bike,) and passes a load test. Hooked to bike, all start-up functions appear normal, and no error codes show up except low oil pressure, since engine doesn't spool up well enough to get pressure up.
It will turn the starter over instead of just "clunk and die" and will start the engine, but now blows the 30A main fuse the moment the engine starts. Twice in a row, no new codes in Dash or ECU diag mode.
Not sure where to start looking for a short capable of this behavior. Any well-known pinch points under tank or front cowl? None are evident under the seat or near the starter or main battery cables before they disappear into the harness.
