Dellorto VHB throttle slide return springs V7sport

My throttle slide return springs seem very heavy duty as it takes quite abit of pull to actuate them. I am gauging this while pulling up on the cable directly at the carb top NOT the throttle handle, so cables, throttle pipe,ect,are out of the equation. This is compared to my Norton, BMW, Laverda and Honda that I own.

Can I clip the springs down abit to releive some tension, or do these square bore VHBs have a nasty habit of sticking and not responding well when decelerating? Maybe the previous owner(s) lost the origionals and put non-std ones in:blink:
 
According to the Dellorto parts book there are 3 different strength springs available but I don't know which is standard for your bike.

I tried different springs in the carbs on one of my Guzzis (admittedly not with VHBs) and found the lightest springs wouldn't reliably snap the slides down at high RPM so take care.
 
The VHBs have a crude pumper built into the atomizer. The spring in the pumper works against the slide return spring. If you go to the hardware store and find a stronger pumper spring (it won't make it pump more) it will counter the slide spring. The OD is critical, so match that, it's tough to match that and the ID (stock spring is thin gauge) . The new spring can be spread over the piston after cutting to length.

Don't cut the springs you have. It will only make them stiffer as the spring's coil angle will change. Mike's suggestion to use the stronger pumper spring is good, also the stock spring from the v65 works well.
 
Ok thanks for the info, I have my carb kits and will be going thru each one soon. we're pretty limmited around here for sourcing specialty items so if you know of a specific spring for the pumper I can use please let me know. I might have to try a set of those V65 springs for the throttle slides.
