Difference in oil filters?

My California 1400 Tour came with the new style oil filter with the indents that takes a special oil filter wrench. I just so happens to be the same wrench my 2010 BMW R1200GS took so I was happy with that figuring it was a better quality filter than the UFI that came on my Norge. On those filters the original leaked, the replacement I put on leaked and the third and fourth ones I had purchased as spares hit the trash can unused at I think $26 each. I used an aftermarket filter after that and no leaks
I have changed the oil on the 1400 four times now and received the same type of filter as original. I ordered oil and filter from AF1 and didn't notice till I went to install it last night that they sent me a 14 flat regular wrench filter. I installed it but can somebody tell me if this is another POS UFI? No brand name on it.

Ask AF1. Seems the factory is shipping 1400's with a short black unmarked filter. No need to start an oil thread here, but I personally use the U.S. Tech approved (taller) Bosch 3330 on all big block CARC bikes. Easily to find and affordable.

Contacting AF1 got me "Probably a different supplier." I was just curious if anybody on here had insight to if this one would be prone to leaking and who made it. If I am going to get inconsistant supplies from Guzzi I'll probably witch to the Bosch 3330. If Todd will trust it I guess it is good enough. If I am lucky I'll be buying it for a Norge and the Toir will be sold before the next oil change. If we ever thaw out up here.
Another example of why Guzzi has trouble maintaining a profit. I want to buy OEM but why if it varies at random?

The Bosch 3330 is longer than the stock filter, it'll stick out a bit. Does fit straight on, so should be OK.
Nothing wrong with more filter, and still well within the frame rails or anything else, meaning zero issues. ;)

For the 3330, the same as a BMW 1100 or 1150 oil head. Bosch makes the filters for BMW. Most BMW dealers stock the wrench and they are available on line as well.

You may need to add a bit more oil but as long as you check the dipstick after a warm up you'll be fine.

On the plus side, a bit more oil means contaminants are bit less concentrated.

It does not matter. The oil filter hangs down low. You fill to a level on the dipstick. If the filter held another quart you would just add another quart to hit the same level. As a bonus you have just increased the oil capacity.

The short, black unmarked filter is what came with my Cali and is what I used on three oil changes. Interestingly, when changing the filter yesterday, the wrench I used to remove the old filter would not fit the new filter - WTF? Luckily the wrench I use for the filters on my 1200 Sport was a perfect fit. Seems somewhere along the way Guzzi/Piaggio decided to change the OEM part, which I believe was mentioned in this thread.
I've always used the Purolator Pure One PL10241 for the Sport - guess I should use it for the Cali as well?

Prior to installing a sump spacer on my '78 Lemans I asked one of the gentlemen at MGCycle how much more oil would be needed. The answer was none, follow the factory recommended specs. One of the biggest benefits of the deeper is that the crankshaft is no longer thrashing the oil in the sump. Therefore; less resistance, better performance etc. There's a longer dip stick for use with the deeper sump.

DIscuss... :)

BTW: I'm not implying that filling to the recommended level, as indicated on the dipstick will be harmful in any way. After all the relationship between the crankshaft and oil level will be the same.

One nice thing about the Bosch 3330 filter is it has more threads (by about two - three turns), so I always feel it might just be a bit more secure.

I have been using Hiflofiltro HF184 oil filters with no problems. Amazon /Gomotoshop $8.20 w/shipping. I have also run across deals of 3 for $18.49.
