Electrical plug recommendations?

Is anyone using a really good cigarette lighter plug for their electrical connections? If it ever warms up in Minnesota, I'm going to attach a pigtail to the battery with an SAE plug (and, I suppose, get to re-set all of the dash settings), but in the meantime, I want to keep my battery charged. I have tried to use the adapter from my Stop-n-Go kit, which is nice in that it has only 6" of cord, but the springs keep forcing it out - like the socket isn't deep enough. Anyone using anything that stays in place and gives a good electrical connection? Thanks!

yeah, don't know the brand, just picked one up at a local parts shop. Here's what I did. Cigarette lighter socket are a little smaller in diameter that accessory outlets. Makes sense, can't use a cigarette lighter in a accessory lighter otherwise you can start a fire. I replaced my under seat accessory outlet to keep a rechargeable flashlight from falling out. I also used a water resistant accessory outlet with a spring loaded door to run an electrical cooler worked great. Just zip tied it the my grab bar and connected it with a SAE connector to the battery SAE pigtail normally used for charging. Depending on what your using it for the smaller BMW type sold at Powerlet and other places offers a better connection than the automotive style.

+1

The Powerlet/BMW style connector is far superior as it doesn't work loose like the US "cigarette lighter" style connector.

I wish the underseat connector was the Powerlet style, I will change it out when I get mine.

I agree. If you change yours to a Powerlet, could you post your work on the Forum so that we can see what we are in for if we do this ourselves?

I found a good write up of somebody who's done this already. This guy's blog page has very good instructions and pix on how to do it. Just sroll down a ways.

It looks pretty easy to do, I'm stoked.

I think Guzzi should offer this plug instead, but I see Yamaha uses the same silly US style plug on the Tenere, so ...... I guess you can't blame them for trying to match the silly standard plug used here.

Yea, that's my page. I started it due to the questions I was always getting of what I did, how it did it. Page will expand as I do more mods. (tool box, rear topcase, and...?)

As far as the powerlets- I convert all my stuff to these, including battery tenders. You can't use a tender on the NTX unless you wire the outlet to the battery direct.

Consider Burnsmoto.com for the powerlets and a powerlet to USB charger that I use.

Thanks for putting it together, good job!

I also convert my bikes over to Powerlet style. I got familiar with it on my old BMW and realized what a good design it was. I found Powerlet's website and the rest is history. I made up a SAE to Powerlet adapter cord for use with my Battery Tender.

I will definitely change over the power ports on the Stelvio when I get one. I also intend to either move the underseat one to the lower left side someplace or add another one. I don't really have a huge need for one under the seat. I usually have one on the lower left side for my heated gear and another one up top near the handlebars for the GPS and charging stuff in the tank bag.

Kirb, I love your blog - great photos, good decisions on the mods you have made - all jobs well done. My concerns on the wimpy cig connector are over - I have a pigtail direct to the battery, so the factory connectors won't get much use.

Moving on, I need a tankbag. Kirb's solution with the Wolfman tailpack is elegant, but as a Luddite who still uses maps, unless I can really adjust my mirrors, I may need something that fits on the tank. I don't want the fixed to the tank solution posted on the tankbag topic - would the regular Wolfman tankbag for dualsports work on a Stelvio?

rhip- I have a Wolfman large expedition bag that I can mount and take photos. Would that help? I'm a fan of water proof without rain covers.

Danketchpel- Remember you have a GPS connector that you can wire into a Powerlet on the left side if you don't want to hard-wire your GPS. You can use it for heated gear.

Kirb, if you could send a pic of the Wolfman on the bike it would be great. I am considering that model, as well as their smaller version, and also the Famsa 244 - which looks like a damn good bag for the money.
