I am a long time Guzzi rider..my 1400 California is my 6th since 2004.
Out for a short ride today the bike was vibes and did not seem right
After five miles from home there was a loud bang, and a cloud of smoke behind me
I pulled into my destination..a half mile further xand smelt burning...
There were fla.es under the nearside pannier...extinguished from a puddle...closer examination found that half the rear brake caliper and both brake pads had disappeared
Fi disappeared. of the inner side of the

Pics? So it sounds like the caliper froze and overheated. What was the brake system last inspected/serviced? Do post some photos. Glad it didn’t end worse. Thanks for posting... it's a reminder to those reading this on how serious it could/can be. If you try a search on the entire site, you’ll find others/similar.

Ok, so no pics. My words still stand.
See @scottmastrocinque ! Some dealers still will do the right thing!

The one thing that never ceases to amaze me, is when people call their motorcycle as “excellent” condition. I obviously have a much different standard.

Every time I see a motorcycle from the UK, the water and road salt damage at the brake and wheel, is always excessive.

I suspect that the caliper pistons had a terrible ring of corrosion on it which prevented it retracting back into the caliper, causing it to overheat. I’ve seen this a hundred times here in Ohio. People do not maintain their calipers and pistons like they should here in our winter snow belt weather.

Nevertheless, I’m glad that you are OK and suffered no personal injury. Thank God.

My guess is the half a caliper and brake pads are probably half a mile back down the road where it first went bang.
