Thought I would dismantle the swingarm and grease the bearings. As its laid up for winter and I have a cheapo for commuting, the mileage has come to a standstill and now only gets used for days out and road trips. Fuck me, I've seen more grease in a politicians handshake. 22,000 miles and the right side bearing collapsed in a cloud of dark rust dust. Methinks Luigi had an extra long lunch. , with extra chianti to rinse it down. Is this the lowest mileage for a shagged bearing, not much cage left, and brown rollers falling out as soon as I pulled the spindle.
Oh well, that'll teach me to check everything more often. Better check the steering head bearings now it's laid up. What's the cost of these bearings, seals. Anyone?

I just re-greased mine recently (at 6K miles). They had a hint of moly grease but not enough to even get my hands dirty. The bearings have a built in grease seal so they are not an item I could find from any bearing house. From the dealer they were about $16 each.

Oh, this on a '12 NTX.

And be aware there is a seal in the frame where the swingarm spindle goes through on each side that is liable to fall out. Make sure it is on its register before you reassemble.

Yes Pete. Have ordered new seals and bearings, but not knocked the old one out yet. And pyoungbl, I took the bearing number and cross referenced it with a bearing supplier and they do a bearing the same size with a built in seal, but, the seal sticks out proud of the race and won`t fit. The bearing is actually specific to Guzzi.

moly grease

Double check the MG shop manual, IIRC a type 2 non-moly bearing grease is specified at least in the B11 manual. The lithium grease I used kinda looked like moly grease of yeasteryears.

In my heart of hearts I don't think it matters, the point I was making was that there was very little grease of any kind on my bearings. Just for grins I checked the specs for my Stelvio NTX and they say to use "lithium grease with molybdmun for bearings and other points needing lubrication". The spec is NLGI2. AGIP grease 2. Once again, any grease would be better than what I found on my bearings.

No doubt, amounts seem to vary from little to almost none.

I shouldn't be surprised at the variation in the guzzi literature. The B11 manual made the "no moly" point as if it were critical, kinda doesn't make sense when moly has been used regularly.

I'll be using bog standard tractor Bearing grease for the bearings, cos that's what I got on the shelf. If it's good enough for tractors, it"ll do for the swingarm. As for the splines, well, I've Procured some Honda moly 60 paste and I'll be burnishing them with the stuff.
