i'd heard of tappets of course but not followers. apparently the same thing? I have tried looking for them in the parts manual but cant orientate. Can someone give me the idots guide on what they do? Are they like lifters?

Well after a decent run last weekend I heard a louder than usual engine speed rattle from the top of the rh pot. limped home and got it into the shop straight away.

Turns out i've buggered a follower. He tells me they are all no good and are being replaced under warranty, (first day of holidays too)
Mine is a 2010 17k and I haven't read anyone else saying this can happen after the bad batch in 2009.
Oh well better get em out and move on. She was just begining to feel run in too!

thanks

Rob

Followers = cam profile followers the same as lifters (a small bucket) which lift the pushrods vertically which then push on the rocker arms, which rock back and forth being pivoted in the middle, which means the other end pushes down on (opens) the valve. To adjust for lash there is a small screw and locknut on the outer end of this rocker arm, it often makes a tapping noise and so some of us call it a tappet.

If that is clear as mud I'll have another go,
Cheers

Ghezzi gave a pretty good description of lifters/ followers. You can Google these terms (and others) to understand what they are n how they work....

This is interesting. Obviously annoying for you but I take it that Mario is the bloke dealing with it? He told me he'd had another bike that failed as well. Strange thing is I haven't had one issue with any of the 8Valvers I've dealt with. not a single failure. I remain baffled as to what the issue is that is causing some tappets to fail and others not???

Pete, any chance you could get a sponsored (by Guzzi) flight to any location that has a plethora of poppet problems?

The English speaking Guzzi world would love an explanation, idea, clue, or whatever. Even if it is a big "DON'T".

Yeh its Mario. A tough lesson already learned there.
Can these deteriorate differently if setup differently or is it more about material integrity from the get go?

Its been 5 days wihtout riding and im getting real antsy. Hope those parts arrive soon.

Thanks for the explanation gez

While that is a wonderfully flattering suggestion it is not one with legs. As I constantly say I have NO IDEA why there are failures. I simply have had none myself with any of the bikes I've maintained. Maybe I've just been lucky? who knows?

What I DO know is that it is NOT any of the things I've been accused of being 'Too Stupid To Understand Or See' that can be sheeted home to 'Conventional' problems.

I'm also not sure that failures are all related to a single cause. I AM convinced, completely, that the motor is not 'Fundamentally flawed' or 'Compromised' If it was then they would ALL be failing, and they aren't.

As I've said before I'd hop on mine and ride to Perth tomorrow without a care as to its reliability. After 50,000 Km I'm convinced its pretty much bulletproof. Some ARE failing though. Why??? I wish I knew???

Pete, the 2010 Stelvio I mentioned has now been mended by Haywards. I'm told They have also changed the rocker gear and gone back to the tighter valve clearances of the first models which makes us wonder if the push rods were running at the wrong angle and preventing the followers from rotating properly and causing wear. It now has the #3 followers.
It's also clear from a letter the owner got from Guzzi UK, that they don't really know why.

update for anyone interested;

so only one follower had failed but it had scratched the cam lobe which required their replacement as well. Took a couple of weeks but im back on top now. Boy two weeks without a bike was like coming off methadone! (i imagine right?)
the nice thing was to finally have the 68 map installed. I cannot overstate the difference between the before and after. It was an angry and jerky biatch before and now its smooth and stable even in traffic.
back to the shop in 1,000 to make sure everythings settled but so far so good.
