The user manual says the fork oil should be 7.5 weight, yet recommends SAE 5W / SAE 20w. Is this implying this should be mixed to make the correct weight? If so, is there a known ratio, or is straight forward math using simple math?

Re: For Oil Weight

Bought a case of 7.5w fork oil based on MG/Agip recommendation. Rather buy a case then pay some one 20 per L. I have extra if your in the area of NW LA county or Ventura county CA

Re: For Oil Weight

7.5 weight is easily obtainable. It is the standard weight for BMW (before the telelever suspension) and readily available from a BMW dealer if you can't find it anywhere else. However, some have found a 15 weight performs better.

Re: For Oil Weight

What a coincidence. I was talking with Ed Sorbo (Lindemann Engineering) this week about fork springs and at the end of the conversation and asked him about fork oil. Ed is very interesting and does like to talk. At any rate, he started by telling me that no one would ever notice the difference between 5w and 10w. In fact, in southern California (he's in Redlands), you could run 30w, if you wanted. Viscosity is not an issue unless you are in a cooler climate (sounds like engine oil considerations). He recommends running the heaviest weight you can in your climate. I believe the weight listed in the owner's manual is MG's recommendation based on your climate. 5w for cold weather and 20w for warmer climates.

Todd recommended I put 15w in my V7.

Thank you all. It seems there is a pretty wide range that is acceptable actually. I am happy in the fact I have PLENTY of high quality 10W on hand, which, it appears, should work very well. I ride year round, even though I live in Colorado, so don't want use oil that is too heavy. We have huge temperature swings here as well so don't want to go too light.

All is right with the world again, until I find another documentation inconsistency ... like probably tomorrow. :D
