Got an itsy bitsy chip on the LH fork and buggered the seal. I can see why those guards are there now but is there anything else you can do to prevent these occuring or is it the perils of upside down forks?

I dont remember ever doing even one on my previous bikes conventional shock setup.

Hey Rob, before you throw your fork leg away, there's a business here in Brisbane that re-chromes fork legs after repairs. RAD shock absorber rebuilding / fork re-chroming, they advertise in all the local mags, bike industry Australia wide use them.

However, their rebuilding is only to stock specs with reguard to seals/oil/ etc. If you want revalving/respringing take the forks to your local suspension guru and they'll sort the lot in one go.

I've been using them for years. I've never had to replace a fork seal once these were installed.
Do you find that they retain moisture and should be removed periodically to dry out (and minimize potential corrosion issues)? I have stone damage on both my forks in areas unprotected by the stock deflectors and the pits are rusting. These pits are outside any seal sweep area thank goodness.

I have not seen them cause corrosion. If they get wet, they dry out pretty fast. I miss full gaiters like the older BMWs, or even the full fork covers as on the Eldorado, Ambassador, or V700. No dead bugs to clean off, no damaged tubes.
